Chapter 10 - a home built on stone

Three weeks later, the rain was gone. The morning sun washed over the sprawling lawn of the Warren estate, turning the ocean below into a dazzling sheet of sapphire and gold.
In the formal dining room, the heavy mahogany table was no longer empty and cold.
At the head of the table sat Spencer Warren. His black shirt was rolled up to his elbows, his posture relaxed for the first time in his adult life. In his left arm, nestled against his chest in a soft cream-colored onesie, was baby Dexter. The boy was wide awake, his striking gray-blue eyes tracking the bright sunlight streaming through the arched windows, his tiny fingers wrapped securely around Spencer’s index finger.
Across the table sat Charlee. Her brown hair was neatly braided with bright blue ribbons, her face healthy and radiant, a plate of warm blueberry pancakes sitting in front of her. Beside her sat an older woman with silver hair and warm, kind eyes—Mrs. Eleanor Hayes, Charlee’s grandmother, dressed in an elegant woolen cardigan, fully recovered from her surgery and looking at her granddaughter with quiet wonder.
Daniel Cross stood near the side console, holding a leather-bound folio. His suit was sharp, his expression relieved. The investigation had swept through Apex Holdings like a wildfire; three corporate executives were facing federal racketeering charges, and Mabel Carter was currently awaiting trial without bail in a federal detention center.
Dr. Pamela Ortiz stood by the French doors, holding a medical portfolio. Her skin had regained its color, though a deep, humble gratitude lingered in her green eyes. She had been fully cleared of all criminal allegations, her testimony proving crucial in dismantling the syndicate that had tried to exploit her clinic.
"The guardianship filings are complete, Spencer," Daniel said, setting the legal documents down beside Charlee’s plate. "The court finalized the emergency custody order this morning. Mrs. Hayes has been granted full residency on the estate’s private cottage grounds, with Spencer Warren appointed as Charlee’s primary legal guardian and educational sponsor."
Charlee looked down at the paperwork, then looked up at Spencer with her wide, honest hazel eyes. "Does that mean... I don't have to hide on the fire escape anymore?"
Spencer set his coffee cup down, his gaze softening into an expression that no boardroom rival had ever seen. He leaned across the table, his hand resting beside hers.
"Nobody hides in this house, Charlee," Spencer said, his voice deep, warm, and unshakable. "You brought my son home to me. As long as I am breathing, you and your grandmother have a home right here. You are family."
Charlee smiled—a wide, bright, gap-toothed grin that filled the enormous room with warmth. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the small blue teddy bear with the satin ribbon, and gently laid it beside Dexter’s blanket on Spencer’s arm.
The baby let out a tiny, happy gurgle, batting his fist against the bear's soft plush ear.
Spencer looked down at his son, then around the room at the people gathered at his table—not business partners, not sycophants, but the family he had never known he needed, brought together by an act of pure courage in the freezing rain.

He placed his broad, tattooed hand over Dexter’s tiny chest and looked out at the ocean. For the first time in forty-two years, the Warren empire was no longer a fortress built to keep the world out.
It was a home, built to protect the ones within.
