Chapter 7 - the circle narrows

By late afternoon, the Warren mansion had been transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Two private tactical teams sat in unmarked black SUVs at the foot of the drive, while Spencer’s internal security audited every digital line connecting the estate to the outside world.

In Spencer’s vast second-floor study, the lights were kept low. Rain had returned, pattering softly against the leaded glass.

Daniel Cross stood beside the long mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of clinic acquisition filings. Dressed in his customary charcoal three-piece suit, Daniel looked calm, methodical, and impeccably polished. He had been Spencer’s legal counselor for fifteen years, navigating hostile takeovers, international mergers, and personal contracts.

"It’s an aggressive play, Spencer," Daniel said calmly, sliding a pair of reading glasses down his nose. "If this holding company—Apex Holdings, registered in the Cayman Islands—had secured physical custody of the infant, they could have filed an emergency paternity suit in federal court. If something were to happen to you... an accident, a sudden illness... they would control the entire Warren empire through the guardianship petition."

Spencer sat behind the desk, his tattooed hands resting flat on the dark wood. Between them lay the original linen envelope, the hospital record, and a high-resolution photograph taken an hour ago of baby Dexter sleeping peacefully in the nursery.

Across the room, on a deep velvet chaise lounge near the interior doors, Charlee was fast asleep. She was curled on her side, still clutching the blue teddy bear she had picked out for the baby. Mabel had brought her a warm cup of cocoa before she drifted off, completely exhausted from the twenty-four hours that had upended her world.

Spencer looked through the interior glass double doors that looked across the mezzanine toward the nursery. The door was ajar, soft amber light spilling out onto the polished floorboards. Inside, Mabel was slowly rocking the hand-carved birch cradle, her back turned to the hall, her presence a silent, steady anchor.

"How long have you known about Apex Holdings, Daniel?" Spencer asked. His voice was deceptively calm, like the surface of a deep ocean before a depth charge detonates.

Daniel didn't flinch. He adjusted his cufflink with one hand, picking up his leather briefcase from the chair beside him. "We looked into them eighteen months ago when they made a quiet run at our logistics shares in Hamburg. I told you then, they’re ruthless. But they operate through twenty layers of shell corporations."

"And the cryo-preservation facility at St. Jude?" Spencer asked, his gray-blue eyes tracking Daniel’s every micro-movement. "Who signed off on the transfer when the clinic was sold?"

Daniel took out his gold pen, tapping it once against his palm. "I’ll have my junior associates pull the archive logs from the state registry tonight. We’ll have the names by dawn."

"Don't bother," Spencer said quietly.

Daniel paused. "Excuse me?"

"You’ve been making phone calls from this room for the last two hours," Spencer said, leaning back slowly in his leather chair. "You haven't once asked how the girl got through the gate. You haven't once asked if the baby is healthy. You're an attorney, Daniel. You don't investigate crimes unless you're trying to manage the fallout."

Daniel’s calm smile did not waver, but his posture hardened. "I’m protecting your interests, Spencer. As I always have."

"Then leave your phone on the desk," Spencer said softly. "And go home for the night. We will finish this in the morning."

Daniel hesitated for two seconds. He set his private smartphone down beside the photograph of baby Dexter. "Get some sleep, Spencer. You’re seeing shadows."

He turned and walked out of the study, his leather shoes clicking evenly against the parquet floor before fading down the grand staircase.

Spencer waited until the front door clicked shut. Then he picked up Daniel's phone, tapped the screen, and plugged an encrypted bypass drive into the port.
