Chapter 4 - Shadows Over the Bay

Rachel’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She scrambled across the hardwood floor toward her diaper bag sitting beside the bed. With frantic hands, she dumped its contents onto the white duvet—diapers, wet wipes, extra baby clothes, formula cans.

Near the bottom, wrapped inside a spare baby blanket, was a small, plastic toy rattle shaped like a yellow duck. She picked it up. A faint, rhythmic hum vibrated through the plastic. Rachel squeezed the toy tightly, snapping the cheap seam open. Inside, nestled among tiny plastic beads, sat a metallic tracking beacon no larger than a coin.

She stared at it in horror. Marcus had given her that rattle the day before he vanished. He had insisted she keep it in the bag at all times.

It hadn't been a gift. It had been a beacon.

Outside her bedroom window, the deep rumble of an explosion shook the heavy glass frames. High-voltage security lights around the compound’s perimeter flickered and died, plunging the room into shadow lit only by the red glow of emergency backup lanterns.

Rachel sprinted into the nursery, scooping a startled Sophie out of her crib. The baby let out a tiny whimper, sensing her mother's panic, but Rachel held her close, wrapping her in the fluffy pink cardigan.

The heavy deadbolt on the suite door clicked. The iron rod retracted with a loud metallic snap.

Rachel backed into the corner of the room, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the mantelpiece, her knuckles turning white. "Stay back!" she screamed into the darkness.

The door swung open. A tall figure stepped into the frame, silhouetted by the red emergency lighting in the hallway.

It was Ethan. He held a heavy tactical sidearm in his right hand, his black shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing intricate tattoos covering his broad forearms. His expression was as calm and terrifying as ever.

"Put the candle down, Rachel," he said smoothly, stepping inside and locking the door behind him. "We have less than three minutes before they breach the lower level."

"They came here because of this!" Rachel yelled, tossing the broken rattle onto the floor. "You brought me here knowing I was being tracked!"

"I brought you here because this is the only facility equipped with a reinforced sub-basement," Ethan replied without raising his voice. He walked toward a heavy bookshelf lining the wall, pulled a leather-bound volume, and engaged a hidden mechanical release.

The entire bookshelf swung inward with a heavy hiss, revealing a narrow, lit concrete stairwell descending into the rock below the house.

"Where does that lead?" Rachel demanded, holding Sophie tight.

"To the docks below the cliff," Ethan said. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small, noise-dampening ear protection headset designed for infants, and gently fitted it over Sophie's ears. The baby looked up at him with wide, curious eyes, reaching out a tiny hand to touch his tattooed wrist.

Ethan looked down at the infant for a brief second, his cold eyes softening with that strange, inexplicable gentleness. "She won't hear the gunfire down there."

"Ethan, tell me what Project Hydra is!" Rachel cried out as distant automatic gunfire echoed through the upper floors of the mansion. "I saw the photograph! You were there when she was born!"

Ethan paused at the threshold of the hidden passage. He turned his head, his dark eyes fixing onto hers with absolute intensity.

"I was there because I was paid to protect her the day she was born, Rachel," Ethan said softly. "And I was paid by your mother."

Rachel went completely still. Her mother had died in a car accident twenty years ago.

Before she could speak, the bedroom door gave a violent shudder as a breacher charge detonated against the outer hinges. Smoke poured through the cracks.

"Move!" Ethan commanded, shoving Rachel gently into the secret passage and slamming the heavy steel door shut behind them, locking them into the absolute darkness of the stone stairwell.
