Chapter 7 - Signals in the Dark

The screen flickered as the grainy video feed played on. Marcus looked hollow, his face pale and covered in cuts, but his dark eyes burned with desperate life. He looked directly into the camera lens, his breath ragged.
"Rachel..." Marcus rasped, his voice weak and trembling. "If you're seeing this... don't go to the vault. It's a trap. Ethan... Ethan isn't who he claims to be—"
The video cut off abruptly, replaced by a static signal that quickly resolved into a simple text prompt: EXCHANGE LOCATION: SECTOR 9 DOCKS. 0400 HOURS. BRING THE CHILD OR THE HUSBAND DIES.
The silence in the car was suffocating.
Rachel stared at the black screen, her chest heaving as tears spilled over her lashes. "He's alive..." she sobbed, clutching Sophie close. "Marcus is alive!"
She looked up at Ethan, but the expression on his face had shifted. His eyes were cold, calculating, and utterly unreadable.
"Ethan, did you hear him?" Rachel pleaded, reaching forward to grab his shoulder. "We have to go to Sector 9! We have to save him!"
Ethan did not move. He stared straight ahead at the concrete wall of the parking garage. "It's a manufactured broadcast, Rachel."
"What do you mean?" she cried out. "I saw his face! I heard his voice!"
"Voice synthesizer technology and deepfake rendering can replicate a hostage video in less than two minutes using existing audio files," Ethan said coldly. "They knew we breached the compound. They are using your emotional attachment to Marcus to draw you out into an open field where my tactical team cannot protect you."
"And what if it's really him?" Rachel demanded, her voice rising in desperation. "What if he's being tortured right now because he tried to save our daughter? Are you just going to leave him there to die?"
"If Marcus is alive, he is being kept in a high-security facility three thousand miles from here," Ethan stated with absolute finality. "Going to Sector 9 at four in the morning is suicide."
"You said you were my shield!" Rachel yelled, her hands trembling with rage. "You said you swore an oath to my mother! Is this how you protect us? By ignoring my husband's life?"
Ethan turned slowly in his seat, his massive frame looming over her. "My oath was to keep you and Sophie alive, Rachel. Not to indulge a suicide mission orchestrated by the people who want to put your daughter in a lab for the rest of her life."
Rachel recoiled, pulling back into her seat. She glared at him with pure defiance, her jaw set.
For the next two hours, neither of them spoke. Ethan remained in the driver's seat, his eyes scanning the security monitors on his tablet, while Rachel sat in the back, pretending to nurse Sophie.
At 03:15 AM, Ethan’s radio clicked softly. A voice spoke through his earpiece: "Sir, perimeter check clear. I am securing the upper entrance."
"Acknowledged," Ethan replied quiet. He unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped out of the vehicle. "I am stepping out to verify the perimeter sensors. Stay in the car."
He closed the door firmly behind him, his heavy footsteps echoing as he walked down the dark concrete ramp toward the upper level.
The moment he disappeared around the corner, Rachel moved.
She grabbed the canvas diaper bag, slung it over her shoulder, and gently strapped Sophie into a soft front-facing baby carrier against her chest. She pulled the hood of her cardigan over her dark hair, picked up the silver key and the glass vial from the center console, and slipped quietly out of the rear door.

She moved like a ghost through the shadows of the lower garage, heading toward an emergency exit door marked with a dim green light. She pushed the iron bar open, slipping out into the rainy, wind-swept alleyway outside.
She wasn't going to let Ethan decide her family's fate. She was going to Sector 9.
