Chapter 12 - DANIEL’S SON, ANDREW’S SON

Julian’s eleventh birthday happened quietly.
No Santelli ballroom.
Ruth’s house.
Pizza.
Soccer cake.
Victor attended.
Maisie too.
Clarissa joined for one supervised hour at Julian’s request.
Everyone behaved.
Awkwardly.
That counted.
Julian opened gifts.
Victor gave him Daniel’s old compass.
Not expensive.
Personal.
Julian stared.
“He used this?”
“When sailing.”
“He died sailing.”
“Yes.”
“Is that weird?”
“Maybe.”
Julian held it.
“I like it.”
Ruth gave him Andrew’s old watch.
The boy looked at both objects.
One from biology.
One from childhood.
No need to choose.
Clarissa watched.
Cried.
She did not interrupt.
Good.
Later Julian asked Victor:
“What do I call myself?”
Victor frowned.
“Julian?”
“No.”
He rolled his eyes.
“Santelli-Mercer?”
“You don’t need to decide.”
“Mom says I should take Santelli someday.”
“Ruth?”
“Keep Mercer.”
“What do you think?”
Victor considered.
“Andrew gave you Mercer.”
“Daniel gave me biology.”
“Yes.”
“Which is more important?”
“Wrong question.”
Julian frowned.
Victor continued.
“What name feels like yours?”
“Mercer.”
“Then keep it.”
“What if later I want both?”
“Then explore it.”
The boy nodded.
Identity not court-ordered.
Good.
Maisie overheard.
“Don’t take Santelli.”
Julian stared.
“Why?”
“Too many people spell it wrong.”
Victor laughed.
Family healed in strange forms.
The trust board finalized Daniel’s descendant branch.
Julian received protected economic rights.
Independent trustees.
No Clarissa.
No Victor.
No Ruth.
Appropriate distributions for education, health, future.
At twenty-five, expanded access.
No automatic corporate control.
Daniel’s old recording incorporated as nonbinding guidance:
Let him be a person before anyone asks him to represent a name.
Maisie’s trust restructured similarly.
Equal standards.
No sex preference.
No “real heir.”
Victor had that phrase formally removed from family governance presentations.
Evelyn told him language bans were dramatic.
He said:
“Good.”
Then Daniel’s estate produced one last curiosity.
A safe-deposit inventory referenced:
RED CHRISTMAS FILE.
No one found it.
Could be old tax documents.
Could be something Daniel intended for future family.
Secondary thread.
Not urgent.
Victor refused to chase it before Maisie’s school recital.
Evelyn smiled.
“You’re improving.”
“I dislike your tone.”
The recital mattered more.
Maisie played piano badly.
Victor applauded as though Carnegie Hall.
She glared.
Julian attended.
Afterward he said:
“You missed a note.”
Maisie replied:
“You lost last Saturday.”
May you like
Cousins.
Perfect.
