Chapter 7 - DANIEL’S RECORDING

Daniel had left one more thing.
An audio file stored with his attorney.
Release condition:
Verified paternity.
The condition had now been met.
Victor, Julian, Ruth, therapist, and Evelyn listened.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“If this plays, apparently I’m somebody’s biological father.”
Julian smiled despite tears.
Daniel continued:
“I hope I’m alive when you hear this.”
Silence in the room.
Then:
“If I’m not, I need whoever is playing this to do something very specific.”
Victor already knew.
“Do not make this kid an heir.”
Julian looked at Victor.
Victor almost laughed.
Daniel continued.
“Our father loved that word.”
“Heir.”
“He thought it made boys strong.”
“It mostly made grown men behave badly around children.”
Victor leaned back.
Exactly.
Daniel spoke about Andrew.
“If Andrew raised you, respect him.”
“He knew there was uncertainty.”
“He told me one thing when we talked.”
Then Daniel imitated Andrew:
“Biology can show up late. Bedtime doesn’t.”
Julian cried.
Ruth did too.
Daniel continued.
“I don’t want to take Dad from you.”
“If I get to be part of your life, I’d like to be Daniel.”
“Maybe Dad too someday if you choose.”
“But never because a test orders you.”
Victor looked away.
His brother had understood parenthood better before becoming a father than many men did after.
Then Daniel addressed Victor.
“Yes, Victor, I know you’re listening because you’re nosy.”
Maisie, who heard the age-appropriate recording later, loved that line.
Victor did not.
Daniel continued:
“Do not put him in a suit and start explaining the family.”
Julian looked at Victor’s tuxedo photograph on the wall.
Smiled.
“Let him be ten.”
Then:
“And if Father’s stupid trust gives him money, hire professionals.”
“Not cousins.”
“Not girlfriends.”
“Not whoever is currently telling you family should keep things inside.”
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
Daniel was prophetic.
Finally:
“If Julian has cousins, brothers, sisters—whatever—do not let adults tell them someone else’s existence reduces theirs.”
Victor’s throat tightened.
Clarissa had done exactly that to Maisie.
Daniel finished:
“You don’t protect children by deciding which one matters most.”
“You protect them by making sure nobody has to compete for love.”
Recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Julian wiped his face.
“Can I keep it?”
“Yes,” Victor said.
Copy.
Protected.
His.
Then Julian asked:
“Was he funny?”
Victor smiled.
“He thought he was.”
“That means yes.”
“Unfortunately.”
Something shifted.
Daniel stopped being a DNA result.
Became a person Julian could begin knowing.
Later Maisie listened to selected parts.
At the end she said:
“He said I don’t have to compete.”
“No.”
“So why did Clarissa tell me I did?”
Victor answered honestly.
“Because she wanted control.”
“Of money?”
“Yes.”
“Of you?”
“Probably.”
“Of Julian?”
“Yes.”
“Of me?”
Victor paused.
“Yes.”
Maisie frowned.
May you like
“That’s too many people.”
Exactly.
