Chapter 13 - THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE

On Millie’s ninth birthday, Victor gave her something unusual.

A folder.

Not the legal original.

Copies.

The first hospital record.

Millie Ward.

The amended certificate.

Millie Bellacosta.

A photograph of Amelia holding her.

And a simple note Victor wrote:

Both names belong to the same girl.

Millie read slowly.

“Why are you giving me paperwork?”

Victor smiled.

“Because other people used it to scare you.”

She touched the old alias.

“Ward.”

“Your great-great-grandmother’s name.”

“Was she nice?”

“I have no idea.”

“Then that’s disappointing.”

Victor laughed.

Millie looked at the original.

“Father unknown.”

“Yes.”

“You were known.”

“I was extremely known.”

She smiled.

“Too known?”

“That was the problem.”

She understood now in age-appropriate terms.

Mom used a safe name.

Dad’s name stayed off the temporary record because people were snooping.

After Millie was safe, the record was corrected.

No shame.

No hidden father.

No baby swap.

No secret illegitimacy.

Just adults improvising under fear.

Millie asked:

“Can a paper say something that isn’t true?”

“Yes.”

“Then why do papers matter?”

“Because people agree to use them to organize truth.”

She frowned.

“That sounds like Paige.”

“It is.”

Victor had stolen the explanation.

Millie put both copies side by side.

“Which is the real one?”

“The current one is legally correct.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Victor looked at her.

Children.

“What do you think?”

She pointed to the photograph.

“This.”

Amelia holding her.

Victor felt tears.

“You’re probably right.”

Then she pulled a tiny velvet pouch from a drawer.

The tooth.

Victor stared.

“You still have it?”

“Tooth Fairy gave it back.”

He frowned.

“I did not.”

“Nora.”

Of course.

Millie held it up.

“Corinne wanted this to prove who I was.”

“Yes.”

“Do I need it?”

“No.”

She thought.

Then dropped it into a small keepsake box beside Amelia’s silver hair clip.

“Then it’s just my tooth.”

Exactly.

The object lost its adult meaning.

May you like

Returned to childhood.

That felt like victory.
