Chapter 14 - WHAT CORINNE ACTUALLY LOST

A year and a half after the birthday incident, Paige gave Victor the final financial report.

“What did Corinne lose?”

Victor asked.

Paige frowned.

“Why phrase it that way?”

“Because she acted as if Millie’s existence cost her everything.”

Paige opened the file.

Corinne lost:

The inflated Voss claim.

Bellacosta-related consulting access.

Potential marriage.

Potential future family status.

Confidential-data privileges.

Some money through civil penalties and repayment.

She did not lose:

Her home.

Her independent investments.

Her profession.

Her relationship with her siblings.

Her basic future.

Victor looked at the list.

“So she destroyed our relationship trying to preserve something she never actually owned.”

“Yes.”

Temporary leverage.

Potential contracts.

Imagined position.

It reminded him of Claire Voss.

Matteo.

Samuel.

All those adults touching Millie’s life because they feared losing things that were not truly theirs.

Paige continued.

“There’s one unresolved matter.”

Of course.

An old payment from Voss Management to:

A.W. CONSULTING.

Amount:

$180,000.

Date:

Three weeks before Millie’s birth.

No clear owner.

Could be connected to the tracking device.

Could be unrelated.

“Danger now?”

“No.”

“Then investigate quietly.”

Good.

Second open thread:

Amelia’s digital drive referenced a sealed letter for Millie at age sixteen.

Victor had not opened it.

He would not.

Progress.

Third:

A small trust account under Rose Ward’s maiden name remained untouched.

Possible education fund.

Possible family history.

Not urgent.

The main story was over.

Millie was safe.

Identity settled.

Corinne out of her life.

Foundation reformed.

Birth certificate explained.

No mysterious second child waiting behind a door.

No paternity bomb.

No conspiracy requiring blood.

Just a family finally understanding how paperwork and fear had been allowed to become more important than a little girl.

Paige closed the file.

“How do you feel?”

Victor considered.

“Embarrassed.”

“Why?”

“I thought power meant knowing everything.”

Paige smiled.

“You never knew everything.”

“I’m noticing.”

“What does power mean now?”

Victor looked toward the garden where Millie chased a dog.

“Being able to hear something I hate without immediately making it worse.”

Paige laughed.

“That should be embroidered on a pillow.”

“Leave.”

May you like

She did.

Still laughing.
