Chapter 13

Clara asked to speak to Dante one final time.

He agreed only with attorneys present.

She looked tired.

The elegant confidence she carried at the barbecue was gone.

“I need you to understand why I did it.”

Dante shook his head.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

“You were afraid Javier would die if he stayed.”

Clara stopped.

“You believed he would never leave voluntarily.”

She said nothing.

“So you created a situation where staying became impossible.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Dante leaned back.

“That motive makes sense.”

Clara seemed surprised.

Then he continued.

“It still doesn’t make what you did acceptable.”

“I never wanted Leo hurt.”

“You used his relationship with Javier as a pressure point.”

“I thought Javier would yell.”

“You spent months making an insecure man feel humiliated, then pointed him at an eight-year-old.”

Clara looked down.

“When Mia tried to intervene, Javier shoved her too.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“I know.”

“You didn’t save your husband.”

Dante’s voice remained calm.

“You removed his choices because you decided you knew which life he should have.”

Clara whispered, “He would never have chosen correctly.”

“That isn’t yours to decide.”

The words stayed in the room.

Dante realized they applied to more than Clara.

His own family had controlled people for generations using the same logic.

We know better.

We know what you need.

We decide because we are stronger.

Clara had used manipulation instead of guns.

The instinct was the same.

Before she left, she asked:

“Do you think he’ll ever forgive me?”

Dante answered truthfully.

May you like

“I don’t know.”

For once, nobody promised an ending they could not guarantee.
