Chapter 7

Javier’s humiliation turned into anger at Clara.

He confronted her without Dante.

That was a mistake.

The argument became loud enough that neighbors called building security.

Nobody was injured.

But Clara left immediately afterward.

She went to the Wisconsin house.

Javier called Dante from his kitchen.

“She said this was what I wanted.”

“What?”

“To prove myself.”

Dante remained quiet.

Javier continued.

“She said I spent years complaining you’d never see me as an equal.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

There was no point lying anymore.

Javier had envied Dante.

Not his children.

Not his money.

Authority.

When Javier entered a room, people looked to see how he reacted.

When Dante entered, they waited to see what he decided.

That difference had bothered Javier for years.

Clara knew it.

“She said you were making me irrelevant.”

Dante asked, “Did you want my position?”

Javier did not answer immediately.

“Sometimes.”

The honesty landed harder than denial.

“Did you plan to challenge me at the barbecue?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to hit me?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to hurt Leo?”

Javier’s voice broke.

“No.”

“But you did.”

“Yes.”

Dante looked out his office window.

“Then whatever Clara was doing, don’t turn her into an excuse.”

“I’m not.”

“Good.”

Javier sounded exhausted.

“What happens now?”

“That depends on the children first.”

Dante had already spoken with Leo’s pediatrician and a child therapist.

Both children were recovering.

But Mia had begun asking whether family gatherings were safe.

Leo became quiet whenever adults argued.

Dante refused to treat that as temporary inconvenience.

Javier would have no contact with either child unless professionals later considered it appropriate.

Javier accepted it.

That acceptance mattered.

But it did not solve the larger question.

Why would Clara spend months making her husband feel threatened, steer him toward a public confrontation, prepare a separate home, and then stand calmly while everything collapsed?

There was only one explanation Dante could see.

May you like

She had wanted something to break.

He just did not know what.
