Chapter 2 - the locks on the master door

By eight o'clock the following morning, the morning sun poured through the high arched windows of Margaret’s double-story suburban home. The quiet that usually filled the house was replaced by the crisp, methodical sound of Margaret clearing out the master suite's hallway closets.

For six months, since Harrison had announced he lost his corporate job, he and Sloan had lived in Margaret’s guest rooms rent-free. Slowly, Sloan’s expensive coats, designer shoes, and overflowing luggage had spilled into Margaret’s private hallway cupboards, pushing Margaret’s late husband’s belongings into boxes.

Margaret opened the double oak closet doors. With swift, calm movements, she gathered Sloan’s fur coats, silk scarves, and leather boots into her arms, walking to the top of the grand staircase and dropping them onto the carpeted landing.

Harrison burst out of the guest room in his undershirt, his eyes wide in disbelief. Sloan followed right behind him, wrapped in a silk robe, her hands clenching into fists as she saw her wardrobe piled on the floor.

"Mom, what are you doing?" Harrison demanded, stepping forward. "Sloan’s clothes are delicate!"

"Your things belong in the room you occupy, Harrison," Margaret said calmly, gathering a second stack of designer boxes and placing them on the floor. "Not in my private hallway, and certainly not in your father's closet."

Sloan glared at Margaret with venomous contempt. "You can't treat us like this! We are family!"

Margaret did not answer her daughter-in-law. She pulled a brass key from her pink cardigan pocket, stepped inside her master bedroom, and closed the solid mahogany door.

Before turning the key in the heavy deadbolt, Margaret looked through the doorway at her son.

"This is my house," Margaret said firmly. "From now on, you live here as guests. And guests respect the host."

The lock clicked sharply, leaving Harrison and Sloan standing in total silence on the landing.
