Chapter 8 - the eviction on quiet lawn

The next morning, a professional process server pulled into Margaret’s driveway.

Harrison and Sloan were sitting at the kitchen island, surrounded by unopened cereal boxes, when Margaret walked in holding two legal documents stamped with an official court seal.

She set one document in front of Harrison and the second in front of Sloan.

Sloan picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the bold black lettering at the top: THIRTY-DAY NOTICE TO VACATE RESIDENTIAL PREMISES.

Sloan let out a harsh, bitter laugh, slamming the paper down onto the granite counter. "An eviction notice? Are you insane, Margaret? We are your family! You can't legally evict your own son!"

"I am the sole owner of this property, Sloan," Margaret said smoothly, leaning against the kitchen counter with her hands folded. "Under state law, you are tenancy-at-will occupants. You have thirty days to clear your belongings from my house."

"Harrison!" Sloan screamed, turning to her husband with raw, furious eyes. "Are you going to sit there and let your mother throw us out on the street?!"

Harrison looked at the legal notice, then up at his mother, his eyes pleading. "Mom, please... we don't have enough cash saved to pay first and last month's rent on an apartment right now! Sloan’s store hasn't made a profit yet!"

"Then I suggest you sell her designer handbags," Margaret replied without a trace of mercy. "Because in thirty days, the locks on this house will be changed."
