Chapter 2 - the key in the velvet box

The silence that followed the whispered name was suffocating. Roman stood frozen beside the giant bookcase, his hand resting on the carved wood, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn't in twenty years.
Only one person in the world had ever called him Romy. And that person was supposed to be dead.
Mia clutched his sleeve tighter, her pale face looking up at him with innocent, frightened eyes. "Is she trapped, Mr. Duca? Did you lock her in there?"
Before Roman could answer, heavy footsteps hurried down the carpeted hallway. Grace Harper, the thirty-two-year-old housekeeper, burst into the study, out of breath, her soft brown hair slightly disheveled and her neat black-and-white maid uniform rumpled.
"Mia!" Grace gasped, running forward and pulling her daughter away from Roman. "Oh my god, baby, what are you doing in here?"
Grace dropped to her knees, hugging Mia and baby Lily tightly, her eyes wide with terror as she looked up at Roman. "Mr. Duca... I am so sorry. I fell asleep downstairs for a moment while feeding the baby, and Mia thought she was helping me finish my chores. Please... please don't hurt her!"
Roman didn't look angry. He looked shaken to his core. He slowly lowered his arm and looked at Grace with sharp, penetrating eyes.
"Grace," Roman said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "How long has my study been unlocked tonight?"
Grace swallowed hard, her rosy cheeks turning pale. "I... I unlocked it at ten to dust the desk, sir. Like I do every Tuesday."
"Did you hear anything coming from behind this wall?" Roman asked, pointing toward the bookcase.
Grace’s breath caught. She looked at the wooden shelves, then down at Mia, who nodded weakly against her mother's apron.
"Sometimes... late at night when I'm polishing the floors," Grace admitted in a low whisper, "I hear soft knocking. But I thought it was just the heating pipes in the old mansion. I swear I didn't know!"
Roman turned back to the bookcase. He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box he always carried with him. Opening it, he revealed a heavy brass key with intricate Duca family engravings.

He pushed aside three heavy leather-bound volumes on the third shelf, revealing a hidden keyhole embedded in the wall.
He inserted the brass key and turned it with a heavy, metallic click.
