Chapter 1 - the secret in the drawer

The midnight air inside the sprawling Rossi estate was heavy, silent, and suffocatingly cold. Outside, a gentle rain tapped against the high arched windows, casting long, liquid shadows across the vacant corridors of the west wing.

Elina Carter moved through the darkness like a ghost. At twenty-nine, Elina had worked as a loyal housemaid inside the mansion for six years—quiet, hardworking, and perpetually invisible to the high-ranking syndicate bosses who frequented the property. Her long dark-brown hair was pulled back into a neat, practical bun, and she wore her classic dark navy housekeeping dress with crisp white piping and a clean white apron. But tonight, her hands were trembling violently, her chest heaving with every silent breath she took.

Clutched tightly against her chest was a small, delicate bundle wrapped in a soft cream blanket. Beside the baby’s cheek sat a worn beige stuffed rabbit, its frayed ears tucked under the fleece.

Elina slipped through the narrow doorway of an old, unused servants’ bedroom near the end of the corridor. The room was dusty, filled with covered furniture and forgotten relics of the estate's past. Moving with frantic care, Elina pulled open the deep bottom drawer of an antique wooden dresser. She lined the wooden box with three soft velvet pillows, creating a warm, hidden nest.

Carefully, reverently, she lowered three-week-old baby Marisol into the drawer. The newborn had a soft tuft of dark hair and delicate features, sleeping peacefully beside her beige stuffed rabbit.

Elina peeked nervously through the crack in the door toward the dark hallway, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stepped back, gently pushing the bedroom door shut until only a sliver of light remained.

A sudden, heavy footstep echoed from the corridor.

The door slowly swung open, revealing a towering silhouette framed by the hallway light.

It was Damiano Rossi.

At forty-two, Damiano was Chicago’s most feared and powerful Mafia Boss—a man whose quietest whisper could alter the fate of the entire city. He was exceptionally tall, broad-shouldered, and ruggedly handsome, with long dark wavy hair falling around his shoulders, a thick groomed beard, and an intimidating presence that commanded absolute submission. He wore a fitted black suit, an open-collar black shirt, a luxury wristwatch that glinted under the dim light, and polished black shoes.

Elina froze beside the dresser, all the color draining from her face.

Damiano’s sharp eyes immediately caught the open bottom drawer. His brows furrowed into a sharp, suspicious line. He took two heavy strides into the room.

Instinctively, Elina stepped straight in front of him, using her frail body as a human shield between the mob boss and the dresser.

Damiano didn't push her aside. He simply looked past her shoulder, his gaze dropping into the open wooden drawer.

Resting on the velvet pillows was a three-week-old infant, wrapped in a cream blanket beside a beige stuffed rabbit.

Damiano’s expression hardened into an icy mask of deep suspicion. He looked down at Elina, his voice dropping into a quiet, chilling baritone that sent a shiver through the room.

"Whose baby is this?" Damiano asked quietly.

Elina lowered her dark eyes, her lips trembling as she pressed her hands against her white apron. She could not answer.

Before Damiano could demand another answer, the newborn began to stir. Marisol let out a tiny, soft whimpering sound, her small arms waving beneath the soft fabric.

Elina moved quickly, gently lifting Marisol from the drawer and holding her protectively against her chest, bouncing her softly to soothe her.

Damiano took one step closer, his towering frame casting a massive shadow over the young housemaid.

Marisol slowly opened her eyes.

Damiano stopped dead in his tracks.

The newborn blinked up at the towering crime lord, revealing striking, crystal-clear blue-gray eyes—eyes that were virtually identical to Damiano’s own piercing gaze.

Damiano stared at the baby, his stoic, guarded expression shattering into raw, stunned disbelief. He reached out with two large, tattooed hands, his movements unexpectedly gentle as he took the tiny infant from Elina’s arms.

The moment Marisol was placed against Damiano’s broad chest, she instantly grew calm. She reached out with one tiny, fragile hand and wrapped her tiny fingers around Damiano’s thumb.

Damiano looked down at the tiny child resting in his massive hands, his broad chest rising and falling as a wave of intense emotion washed over his rugged features.

Elina watched him, tears gathering in her dark eyes, holding her breath.

"Who was her mother?" Damiano asked, his voice stunned and thick with emotion.

Elina remained completely silent, her chest rising and falling in silent terror.

As Damiano held the infant higher against his chest, the edge of Marisol’s cream blanket shifted slightly.

A small, tarnished silver pendant slipped out from beneath the fleece, falling through the air.

Damiano caught the object smoothly in his palm.

He held it up to the dim light. Engraved into the silver face was the official Rossi family crest—a crowned dragon surrounding a sword—and beneath it was an engraved date from nine months earlier.

Damiano looked sharply at Elina, his blue-gray eyes flashing with dark, lethal anger.

Before Elina could speak, a shadowy figure stepped into the open doorway.

It was Marco Bellini.

At forty-five, Marco was Damiano’s longtime head of security—tough, observant, disciplined, and fiercely loyal. Dressed in a fitted charcoal suit, black shirt, and a discreet earpiece, Marco’s sharp eyes locked onto the silver pendant in Damiano’s hand.

In a split second, Marco’s disciplined face transformed, a flash of recognition and sudden guilt passing across his eyes.

Elina caught Marco’s reaction instantly. She looked from Marco to Damiano, her voice breaking into a quiet whisper:

May you like

"He already knew."

Damiano slowly turned his head, locking his piercing blue-gray gaze directly onto his security chief as the room plunged into an icy, terrifying silence.
