Chapter 10 - the threshold of tomorrow

Six months later, the spring sun warmed the grand terrace of the Rossi estate.

Blooming cherry blossom trees framed the lush green lawn overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan. The dreary, suspicious atmosphere that had hung over the property was gone, replaced by light, warmth, and peace.

Sitting in a comfortable white armchair on the sunlit terrace was Elina Carter. She wore an exquisite floral silk dress, her long dark-brown hair falling softly over her shoulders, her rosy skin glowing with radiant beauty and health.

Sitting in her lap was six-month-old Marisol. The baby had grown beautiful and strong, wearing a little pink dress, her striking blue-gray eyes bright with laughter as she played with her worn beige stuffed rabbit.

Walking out onto the terrace was Damiano Rossi. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his broad forearms, dark trousers, and polished shoes. In his hands, he carried two glasses of fresh lemonade.

He set the glasses down on the table, sat beside Elina, and gently wrapped his broad arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his chest.

Elina leaned her head against his broad shoulder, holding Marisol between them, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of love and safety.

"She looks more like Julian every day, Damiano," Elina whispered softly, touching the baby's dark hair.

"She has Julian's heart," Damiano said gently, kissing Elina's forehead. "And she has your courage."

Marisol let out a sweet, bubbling laugh, reaching out her small hand to grab Damiano’s gold wristwatch, pulling herself up against his broad chest.

Damiano laughed warmly, lifting his niece into his arms, kissing her soft cheek as Elina wrapped her arms around both of them in a warm, unbroken family embrace.

Suddenly, Marco walked quietly out onto the terrace, holding an unsealed black leather portfolio bearing an official diplomatic seal from London.

"Sorry to disturb the afternoon, Boss," Marco said softly, his expression unusually serious. "This was just delivered by a private courier from the British Embassy."

Damiano’s smile faded slightly. He accepted the heavy portfolio, opened the flap, and pulled out a single sheet of aged parchment paper.

Written across the parchment in dark, elegant silver calligraphy was a short, cryptic message:

Damiano Rossi and Elina Carter,

You have defeated Victor Vane and claimed Marisol's inheritance in Chicago.

But the secondary key you possess opens more than just a single vault in London. It opens the master archives of the Sovereign Syndicate in Rome—where the true secrets of the Rossi bloodline have rested for fifty years.

Your presence is requested in Rome.

The Sovereign Council.

Damiano stared down at the silver ink as a cold, electric resolve settled over his broad, powerful frame. He felt no fear—only the unyielding, fierce protection of a man who would cross the world to keep his family safe.

He folded the parchment slowly, slipping it into his pocket, and looked down at Elina and little Marisol, who were smiling up at him under the spring sun.

Damiano looked at Marco, a slow, fierce smile touching his lips beneath his dark beard.

"Prep the private jet for Rome, Marco," Damiano commanded in a low, lethal baritone. "Our family's journey is just getting started."
