Chapter 14

The baby was born healthy four months later.

A daughter.

They named her Sophie.

Margaret was not at the hospital.

Neither was Caleb.

Daniel’s family had become much smaller by then.

Not because every relative was banished.

Because invitations stopped being automatic.

The people who had witnessed Emma’s treatment and genuinely taken responsibility were allowed limited contact after Emma decided she was ready.

Those who minimized it were not.

The foundation changed too.

Margaret and Caleb were gone from governance.

Independent directors became a majority.

Related-party vendor contracts required disclosure and competitive review.

Trustees received compliance training that Margaret once would have mocked.

Emma returned to the board eventually.

Not immediately.

Daniel asked once.

She said no.

Three months later, she asked for the papers herself.

That difference mattered.

Northstar survived under new ownership after Caleb divested his interest.

Valid employees kept their jobs.

The foundation recovered part of its losses through restitution and insurance.

Bennett Hospitality replaced Northstar where conflicts existed but kept necessary services operating during transition.

No dramatic collapse.

No innocent workers paying for the family scandal.

Daniel also spent less time traveling.

Not because Emma demanded it.

Because he finally accepted that his preference for avoiding family conflict had costs.

He had spent years telling himself Margaret was difficult but manageable.

Caleb irresponsible but harmless.

Relatives passive but loyal.

Emma had paid for those comforting descriptions.

One evening she found Daniel looking at the original dinner photographs.

Fish bones.

Water.

Wedged chair.

She took the phone from his hand.

“Why do you keep those on here?”

“Evidence.”

“The case is over.”

He looked at her.

Emma deleted the copies from his personal phone.

The legal originals remained preserved with counsel.

Then she handed the phone back.

“I don’t want that table following us everywhere.”

May you like

Daniel nodded.

For once, preservation of evidence and preservation of memory did not have to mean the same thing.
