Chapter 2

The grand ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence. The shattered pieces of china and the ruined birthday cake lay on the marble floor like a desecrated monument. The bodyguards positioned around the room instinctively shifted, their hands moving toward their tailored jackets, but Dominic Moretti simply raised one finger. The subtle motion froze every armed man in the room instantly.
Dominic slowly rose from the head of the table. His towering frame and elegant white suit dominated the space, casting a long shadow over the scattered cake. His intense, commanding presence filled every corner of the room. He didn't yell. He didn't show a single flash of anger. His demeanor remained frighteningly, unnervingly calm.
Elena reached her daughter, dropping to her knees on the marble floor. She pulled the tiny girl in the bright yellow party dress tightly against her pale-blue uniform, shielding the child with her own body. She was terrified. She knew exactly what kind of man Dominic Moretti was, and disrespecting his son on his birthday was an unforgivable offense in their world.
"Mr. Moretti, I am so incredibly sorry," Elena pleaded, her voice shaking violently as she looked up at the towering Mafia boss. "I don't know what came over her. She is just a baby, she doesn't understand. I will clean this up immediately and take her to our quarters. Please, forgive her."
Dominic did not look at Elena. His pale, intense eyes were fixed entirely on the three-year-old girl hiding against her mother’s white apron. He took a slow, deliberate step around the table, his polished white shoes stepping effortlessly over the ruined cake.
"Elena, let her go," Dominic instructed, his voice low and smooth.
"Please, sir," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "She meant no harm."
"I said, let her go," Dominic repeated, the absolute authority in his voice leaving no room for negotiation.
Trembling, Elena slowly loosened her grip. Lily did not cry. The tiny girl stood up straight, her curly brown hair bouncing slightly as she stepped away from her mother. She looked up at the giant, ruggedly handsome man looming over her, entirely fearless.
Dominic looked at the ruined cake, then down at the little girl in the pink shoes. Slowly, the feared Mafia boss lowered his massive frame, kneeling on the hard marble floor until he was perfectly eye-level with the three-year-old. The juxtaposition of the heavily tattooed, immensely powerful man in the white suit kneeling before the tiny toddler sent a ripple of tension through the crowd.
Ethan leaned over the edge of his chair, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Dad? Is Lily in trouble?"
"We are about to find out, Ethan," Dominic replied softly, never breaking eye contact with the toddler.
Dominic rested his large hands on his knees. He studied Lily’s fair, rosy face. He saw no malice, no mischievous glimmer, only a rigid, unusual determination. He knew this child; she was quiet, observant, and fiercely loyal to his son. She didn't act without reason.
"Lily," Dominic said calmly, his deep American accent soothing rather than threatening. "You ruined my son's birthday cake. You scared your mother, and you made a very big mess on my floor."
Lily blinked her large eyes, her expression serious. "I had to."
May you like
"You had to," Dominic repeated, his thick dark hair falling slightly over his forehead as he tilted his head. "And why did you do that, little one?"
"Because it was bad," Lily stated firmly, pointing her tiny finger at the frosting smeared across the marble. "You can't let him eat it."
