Chapter 10

Ethan stood completely paralyzed, leaning heavily against the marble console table. His chest ached with a physical, crushing pressure. He stared into the expansive, silent foyer, the reality of his own catastrophic failure violently tearing apart the foundation of his life.

"Michael," Ethan whispered, tears finally welling in his piercing, terrified eyes. "What was the message?"

Michael hesitated one final time, the weight of the words heavy on his tongue, before delivering Claire's final, devastating command.

"SIR... SHE ONLY ASKED ME TO REMIND YOUR ATTORNEY THAT THE DIVORCE PAPERS ARE WAITING."

Ethan became completely motionless.

The words echoed in his mind, louder than the sound of his fist hitting the wall, louder than any gunshot he had ever heard. The divorce papers are waiting.

His eyes widened slightly, staring blankly at the crystal chandelier reflecting in the antique mirror. His sharp, masculine features slackened, and his lips parted without a single word escaping. He couldn't speak. He couldn't scream. He couldn't order his men to fix it.

His hand, heavily tattooed and strong enough to break a man’s jaw, began to tremble uncontrollably against his ear. The black smartphone shook against his cheek.

"Ethan?" Michael’s voice called out softly from the phone. "Are you still there?"

Ethan didn't answer. He couldn't.

The painful realization washed over him like freezing water. He had completely ignored Claire during the darkest, most agonizing moment of her life. He had traded her absolute loyalty for a weekend of cheap, meaningless infidelity. And now, the woman he arrogantly believed would always be sitting quietly in his magnificent mansion, waiting for him to return from his shadows, had disappeared forever.

He slowly lowered the trembling phone away from his ear. The line remained connected, Michael's faint voice calling his name into the void.

Ethan stared into the silent mansion. The black suitcase by the stairs. The cracked plaster on the wall. The empty hook where her coat used to hang. The absolute, deafening silence of a home that had just died.

His hand shook violently as it dropped to his side. He stood completely alone in the magnificent marble foyer, surrounded by his immense wealth and power, possessing absolutely nothing left to lose.
