Chapter 9

The quietness of the mansion seemed to press inward, suffocating Ethan as he waited for the final verdict. He stared at the cracked plaster wall, at the white dust on the floor, and finally at the empty space where Claire’s life used to intersect with his.
Michael hesitated on the other end of the line. It wasn't the hesitation of a subordinate fearing his boss's wrath; it was the profound hesitation of a man who knew he was about to deliver a fatal blow to someone's heart.
"Michael," Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking, sounding incredibly small. "Please. Tell me what she said. Did she say she needed time? Did she say where she was going to stay in Seattle? I can give her space. I can buy her a house there. I can fix this."
Ethan was bargaining. The ruthless mafia boss who negotiated multi-million dollar extortions with a cold, dead stare was currently bargaining for scraps of hope.
"She didn't ask for space, sir," Michael said softly, the pity evident in his professional tone. "And she didn't leave an address for the cabin."
"Then what was the message?" Ethan asked, his breathing shallow and rapid.
Michael took a deep breath. He had served Ethan Blackwood for a decade. He had seen the man order executions, dismantle rival families, and walk through gunfire without blinking. But he also knew that Ethan’s absolute, fatal flaw was his belief that his actions had no consequences at home.
"She wanted me to inform you that the arrangements for her father are complete," Michael started slowly.
"I know that," Ethan interrupted desperately. "I know. What else? What did she say about us?"
"She didn't mention 'us', Mr. Blackwood," Michael clarified gently. "She was very specific in her instructions. She wanted to ensure that the transition was as smooth as possible for your operations."
Ethan frowned, his thick, wavy dark-brown hair shifting as he shook his head in confusion. "My operations? What does that mean?"
"It means she is completely severing ties, Ethan," Michael said, dropping the last shred of professional distance. "She is gone."
"No," Ethan denied instinctively, his voice trembling. "No, she loves me. She promised she would always wait for me. She promised."

"She did wait," Michael replied quietly. "She waited for three days in an empty house with a broken heart. And you never came."
Michael paused, preparing to deliver Claire's final, devastating instruction.
