Chapter 4

Meredith stood paralyzed in the center of her luxurious living room, her breath coming in short, erratic gasps. The hot tea continued to drip from the white porcelain cup onto her white trousers, staining the fabric, but she seemed completely oblivious to it. Her bright blue eyes darted frantically between Daniel's terrifyingly calm face and the small child still kneeling on the floorboards.

"Daniel... I... I don't know what you're talking about," Meredith stammered, her voice high, thin, and entirely devoid of its usual sophisticated composure. "There's nothing under here. It's... it's a solid concrete foundation. It's just the crawlspace for the plumbing!"

"You're lying," Daniel said flatly.

He didn't raise his voice, but the absolute certainty in his tone was more terrifying than a shout. He took a heavy step toward her, his polished shoes striking the dark wood with an authoritative thud. "I felt it, Meredith. Three taps. Someone is beneath this floor."

"It's an animal, Daniel!" Meredith pleaded hysterically, her charming demeanor completely shattered as she took another panicked step backward, nearly tripping over the edge of a plush cream rug. "It's raccoons! Or rodents in the sub-floor insulation! Houses in this area get them all the time in the fall—"

Before she could finish her sentence, a sound cut through her panicked excuses.

KNOCK.

KNOCK.

KNOCK.

It was no longer a faint, distant vibration. Three unmistakable, loud, and deliberate knocks sounded directly beneath the floorboards where Lily was sitting. The impact was so strong that the plastic pink stethoscope resting on the wood rattled visibly against the dark grain.

Lily let out a sharp gasp, scrambling backward on her knees, clutching her pink cardigan against her chest, her large blue-green eyes wide with absolute terror.

"Daddy!" Lily screamed softly, her voice an urgent, desperate whisper. "Daddy... he's tapping again!"

Meredith let out a strangled, breathless cry. Her hands shook so violently that the delicate white porcelain teacup slipped from her manicured fingers. It fell through the air and shattered violently against the dark hardwood floor, spraying hot tea, pink painted porcelain shards, and steam across the polished wood.

Neither Daniel nor Lily flinched at the crashing china.

Daniel’s gaze snapped from the shattered cup back to Meredith's deathly pale face. The lingering doubts in his mind were instantly incinerated. The terror in his sister's eyes was not the fear of an intruder or an animal; it was the sheer, suffocating panic of a person whose dark, impossible secret had just been ripped out into the light.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside his daughter, wrapping one broad, protective arm around Lily's trembling shoulders, pulling her against his forest-green knitted sweater. With his free hand, he pressed his palm flat against the floorboards directly where the three knocks had echoed.

"Noah?" Daniel called out, his deep voice trembling with a mixture of raw, overwhelming fatherly love and terrifying desperation. "Noah, if you can hear me, tap twice!"

The living room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence. Meredith covered her mouth with both trembling hands, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she stared at the floor, unable to move, unable to speak.

For two agonizing seconds, the house was completely still.

Then, from the dark, silent space beneath the dark hardwood, two solid, deliberate strikes rattled the wood directly beneath Daniel's palm.

*TAP.* TAP.
