Chapter 1

The lights of Manhattan glittered like scattered diamonds against the blackened glass of the penthouse windows, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly heavy. Elena Carter stood in the massive, state-of-the-art kitchen, her movements slow and deliberate as she arranged fresh fruit on a polished silver tray. At thirty years old, she was undeniably beautiful, but a profound, quiet exhaustion radiated from her delicate features. Her chestnut-brown hair fell in soft, loose waves, with one side neatly tucked behind her ear, framing a face that had learned to hide too much over the past three years.
She wore a muted sage-green knit top tucked into high-waisted black trousers. It was a simple, understated outfit that starkly contrasted with the extravagant wealth surrounding her. Elena stared blankly at the crystal water pitcher, her mind replaying the cold distance that had recently settled between her and Nico.
The kitchen doors swung open, and Arthur Bennett stepped inside. At forty-six, Nico’s oldest lieutenant moved with a quiet, composed grace. His salt-and-pepper hair was combed neatly to one side, and his tailored deep-navy three-piece suit fit his tall frame immaculately. A pale-gray dress shirt, burgundy tie, and silver tie bar completed his polished look.
"You shouldn't be playing the maid, Elena," Arthur said gently, his voice a low, gravelly baritone. "We have staff for a reason. You look entirely exhausted."
"The staff is terrified of him tonight, Arthur," Elena replied, not looking up as she poured ice water into a heavy crystal glass. "And honestly, keeping my hands busy is the only thing keeping my mind from spiraling. He has been locked in that study for six hours."
"The Donatelli situation is escalating," Arthur explained, stepping closer and resting a hand on the marble island. "Nico is carrying the weight of the entire syndicate on his shoulders right now. He is emotionally guarded, Elena. You know how he gets when the pressure mounts. He builds walls."
Elena finally looked up, her expressive eyes swimming with a fatigue that went far deeper than physical lack of sleep. "I don't mind the walls, Arthur. I mind that he keeps putting me on the outside of them. I'm his partner, not a porcelain doll meant to sit quietly on a shelf while he fights his wars."
Arthur sighed, a look of quiet sympathy crossing his face. "Give him time. He is a man accustomed to hiding vulnerability. Loving you is the most dangerous thing he has ever done, and it terrifies him. I'll go in and speak with him now."
"Tell him I'm bringing in some water," Elena said, her voice softening.
May you like
"I will," Arthur promised, turning toward the hallway. "And Elena? Don't give up on him yet. Underneath all that pride, he needs you more than he needs air."
Elena watched Arthur’s polished oxford shoes carry him down the dim hallway toward the private study. She picked up the heavy silver tray, her hands trembling slightly. She desperately wanted to believe Arthur’s words, but the cold reality of loving a mafia boss was beginning to freeze her heart completely.
