Chapter 2

The hallway leading to Nico’s private study was bathed in dim, warm light from the amber sconces lining the walls. Elena walked softly, her simple brown ankle boots making no sound against the thick Persian runner. She carried the silver tray of fruit and water, her heart beating in a heavy, anxious rhythm. She just wanted to see his face, to offer a quiet moment of peace in the middle of his chaotic, violent world.

As she approached the heavy oak doors, she noticed they were left half-open. She paused just outside the threshold, intending to knock, but the sound of Arthur’s voice drifting from the study made her freeze in place.

"You are pushing her away, Nico," Arthur was saying, his voice laced with a controlled, intense frustration. "I see it. The men see it. You are treating her like a liability instead of the woman you love. Elena is exhausted. If you keep shutting her out, she is going to walk out that door, and you will have no one to blame but yourself."

Elena held her breath, her grip tightening on the edges of the silver tray. She waited, desperate to hear Nico defend their relationship, desperate for a sliver of reassurance.

Inside the study, Nico Moretti sat behind his massive mahogany desk. He was thirty-eight, broad-shouldered, and fiercely handsome. His short dark hair was styled in a textured side sweep, and light stubble shadowed his strong jawline. He wore a fitted charcoal-gray dress shirt with the top buttons casually left open, the sleeves rolled to his elbows to reveal the stark black tattoos winding along his muscular forearms.

Nico didn't look up from the syndicate paperwork spread across his desk. His expression was entirely dismissive, masked by a defensive, toxic pride. When he spoke, his voice was cold, careless, and filled with a strong, cutting intensity.

"Let her leave," Nico said flatly, the words hitting the air like dropping stones. "If Elena leaves tonight, I’ll change the locks by morning and forget her name by Friday."

Outside the door, the world stopped spinning. Elena felt the words strike her chest with the physical force of a bullet. Her breathing hitched, and her eyes instantly filled with hot, stinging tears. The man she had sacrificed her peace for, the man she had loved through every nightmare and threat, had just reduced her to a disposable inconvenience.

She didn't gasp. She didn't drop the tray. Three years in the mafia had taught her how to absorb a lethal blow in absolute silence.

Elena quietly placed the untouched silver tray on the antique hallway table beside the door. Her hurt expression slowly morphed; the devastating heartbreak in her eyes crystallized into a cold, unbreakable resolve. She reached into the pocket of her high-waisted black trousers and pulled out the heavy, custom-made brass key to the penthouse.

She set the key down gently beside the crystal water glass, the metal making a faint, microscopic clink against the polished wood.

"Then I’ll save you the trouble," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible, vibrating with a low, shattering intensity.

She turned away from the study, her tears silently falling, and walked back down the dim hallway. She was entirely done fighting for a man who had already erased her from his future.
