Chapter 13

Celeste requested mediation with Adrian during their civil separation.

The engagement was obviously over.

But there were property disputes.

Wedding deposits.

A jointly leased Manhattan apartment.

Gifts.

Public statements.

Adrian agreed only because Rebecca recommended closing the financial issues cleanly.

Lena was not involved.

That boundary mattered.

Celeste arrived wearing no engagement ring.

She looked tired.

Still beautiful.

Still composed.

Less certain.

“You humiliated me.”

Adrian stared at her.

“In what version of events?”

“At the party.”

“You assaulted someone in my house.”

“She was spying on us.”

“She was doing the job my father legally appointed her to do.”

Celeste’s eyes hardened.

“You seriously expect me to believe that ridiculous arrangement was normal?”

“No.”

Adrian leaned back.

“My father specifically created it because people like us stop noticing people in uniforms.”

Celeste looked away.

“That doesn’t excuse her invading my privacy.”

“She reviewed trust transactions. Not your diary.”

“She hated me.”

“Maybe.”

Celeste looked at him sharply.

Adrian continued.

“People are allowed to dislike you without committing fraud against you.”

Her shoulders dropped slightly.

For a moment she looked genuinely exhausted.

“Grant told me the trust would never approve anything while she was there.”

“So you framed her.”

“I wanted her gone.”

“And the assault?”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“I lost control.”

Adrian thought about the pointed heel on Lena’s hand.

“You chose cruelty because you thought she couldn’t hurt you back.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

His voice stayed quiet.

“Fair would have been telling me you wanted access and influence I was never going to give you, then leaving.”

Celeste began crying.

This time Adrian could not tell whether it was performance.

He realized it no longer mattered.

She had a plausible motive.

Her relationship with Grant mattered deeply to her.

She wanted financial independence inside a marriage where Adrian’s trust would always remain separate.

She resented the fact that household employees sometimes knew more about Cole family operations than she did.

She felt excluded.

Grant offered a way to turn that resentment into money and influence.

The motive made sense.

It did not excuse anything.

Adrian signed the settlement documents.

The engagement ended formally.

No public revenge campaign.

No leaked footage beyond what legal proceedings required.

No effort to destroy Celeste’s appearance or social standing for entertainment.

Consequences would come from evidence.

Not spectacle.
