Chapter 9

Callahan did not meet Evelyn immediately.
That surprised everyone.
Maple’s therapist advised against turning reunion into an emergency spectacle.
Evelyn’s attorney agreed.
Five years of grief could not be reversed by putting mother and daughter in the same room and hoping biology did the rest.
So first came evidence.
Then decisions.
Evelyn provided her medical records.
Hospital.
Rehabilitation.
Psychological treatment.
Proof she recovered memory gradually but substantially within months of the accident.
She also turned over years of messages from Delphine.
Rebecca compared them with communications Delphine sent to Callahan and family employees.
The lies were systematic.
Delphine told Evelyn that Maple developed panic attacks whenever her mother was mentioned.
Maple’s therapy records showed grief, but no such documented reaction.
Delphine told Evelyn that Callahan had threatened to seek a restraining order.
No filing existed.
She told Evelyn that returning before Maple’s trust stabilized could trigger tax and inheritance consequences.
False.
Then investigators found something Delphine had told the professional trustee.
She repeatedly represented that Evelyn’s disappearance had been thoroughly investigated and there was “no credible evidence of survival.”
That statement continued even after Delphine personally met Evelyn.
Rebecca stared at the dates.
“This is bad.”
Callahan looked at her.
“How bad?”
“Potentially fiduciary fraud. Maybe more depending on how representations were used.”
The money trail also changed.
Delphine’s consulting firm had earned far more than the three hundred thousand already identified.
Companies supporting the proposed sale paid separate advisory fees.
Legal.
Disclosed to some entities.
Not disclosed to the Maple trust.
Total compensation linked to the transaction could have exceeded six million dollars.
If Evelyn reappeared, Delphine lost nearly all of it.
The motive was powerful.
Still, Nathan remained bothered by one thing.
“Why start hiding Evelyn before the sale existed?”
Callahan looked at him.
Exactly.
Delphine found Evelyn nearly five years earlier.
The sale began two years ago.
Money explained why the deception continued.
May you like
It did not explain why it began.
Part 10 finally did.
