Chapter 7

The financial files showed what Margaret and Ryan planned to say after Daniel’s funeral.

A draft board memorandum had already been prepared.

Title:

Unauthorized Treasury Actions — D. Vance

It blamed Daniel for:

Excess withdrawals.

Misclassification of trust assets.

Undisclosed transfers.

Circumvention of board controls.

It claimed Daniel acted alone.

That was false.

Daniel’s signature appeared on some reports.

Ryan’s appeared on many others.

Margaret approved several capital projects funded through entities receiving the disputed transfers.

Charles signed annual board certifications summarizing trust compliance.

Nobody could credibly claim Daniel invented the system by himself.

Then investigators found a draft press statement.

Vance Memorial Group recently discovered that the late Daniel Vance engaged in unauthorized financial activity inconsistent with company policy. The family is cooperating fully and will restore all affected customer accounts.

Sarah read the first two words twice.

The late.

The file had been created before the transport-van fire.

Not after.

Daniel had not even been declared dead when somebody wrote the statement describing him as late.

Ryan’s attorney argued it was a later draft with incorrect metadata caused by synchronization.

Forensic specialists checked.

Original creation timestamp:

Twenty hours before the crash.

That was one of the strongest pieces of evidence yet.

Then came the refinancing plan.

If Daniel died while apparently responsible for the trust deficit, the Vance family intended to combine:

A key-person insurance payout.

Sale of Daniel’s company shares under the buy-sell agreement.

A bank restructuring.

And liquidation of two noncore properties.

Together, those measures could restore most of the missing trust funds without forcing Margaret or Ryan to admit they authorized the underlying liquidity practices.

The company could say:

One rogue CFO created the hole.

He is dead.

Management discovered it.

Management repaired it.

Problem contained.

Daniel would become both cause and solution.

Charles claimed he had never seen the draft blame memorandum.

Investigators found no copy on his devices.

He had participated in earlier decisions.

Signed weak controls.

Deferred difficult questions.

But the evidence still did not show he knew Daniel’s death would be staged.

Sarah struggled with that distinction.

“You let them run everything.”

Charles looked at her.

“I did.”

“You signed reports.”

“Yes.”

“You heard Daniel warning you.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

Charles’s voice cracked.

“Yes.”

That was not kidnapping.

It was not corpse substitution.

It was still failure.

Then Walter remembered something from the morning he was captured.

During his argument with Ryan, he heard Margaret through the phone speaker.

She said:

“Monday has to happen before Daniel can speak.”

Walter had assumed “Monday” meant the regulator’s scheduled review.

Now investigators checked the calendar.

The funeral was Sunday.

The state preneed examination began Monday at 9 a.m.

The timing was not ceremonial.

The funeral was a deadline.
