Chapter 9

Daniel’s cloud backup contained one file nobody had opened.
A photograph.
At first it appeared meaningless.
A concrete wall.
A metal door.
A red fire extinguisher.
Date:
Two days after Daniel supposedly died.
Sarah stared at the timestamp.
“That’s impossible.”
Forensic specialists confirmed the file was created after the transport-van fire.
It had been uploaded through Daniel’s account from a device not yet located.
Metadata placed the upload near one of Vance Memorial’s rural cemetery properties.
The exact location was uncertain.
Then Walter remembered a conversation.
Three days after the crash, his office phone rang from a blocked number.
Daniel’s voice.
Weak.
Fast.
“Walter, don’t call Sarah.”
Walter thought it was a recording.
Then Daniel answered a question Walter had not asked before.
A real conversation.
Walter demanded:
“Where are you?”
Daniel said:
“Not safe.”
“Did Ryan do this?”
Silence.
Then:
“They need Monday.”
The call ended.
Walter went to police.
He was afraid to say publicly that Daniel was alive because he did not know which Vance employees might be involved.
Elise Monroe began quietly tracing possible locations.
Before she could find one, Walter discovered Daniel’s phone had been moved into the funeral facility.
He went there himself.
That was how Ryan captured him.
Sarah was furious.
“You knew Daniel called you?”
Walter looked ashamed.
“I told Detective Monroe.”
“You didn’t tell me.”
“I thought if whoever had Daniel realized you knew he was alive, they would use Emma.”
Sarah stood so quickly her chair moved backward.
“You do not get to make that decision for me.”
Walter accepted it.
“You’re right.”
Elise did too.
“We were trying to protect an active rescue operation.”
“And you let me attend his funeral.”
“Yes.”
Sarah walked out of the room.
It took twenty minutes before she returned.
The next clue came from the photograph itself.
The fire extinguisher had a service sticker.
Company:
Vance Cemetery Maintenance.
Property code:
C-14
One Vance cemetery used that code.
Oak Hollow Memorial Park.
Thirty-seven acres.
Main office.
Maintenance garage.
An unused groundskeeper residence.
And an old stone receiving vault built decades earlier for temporary winter storage before modern refrigeration became standard.
Police obtained warrants.
The groundskeeper residence was empty.
The garage held nothing unusual.
The stone vault had been renovated internally.
Not into a tomb.
Into a secure records room.
Recent food wrappers were inside.
Bottled water.
A blanket.
Medication packaging.
And a chair.
No Daniel.
Someone had moved him.
Then investigators found a camera memory card that had not been removed.
One clip showed Ryan entering.
Another showed Margaret.
The final recorded date:
Three days after Daniel’s funeral was announced.
Daniel was visible for four seconds in the background.
Alive.
Sarah watched once.
Then turned away.
The question was no longer whether Daniel survived the crash.

There had been no Daniel in the crash.
Part 10 was about why his own family needed the world to believe there had been.
