Chapter 1 - the voice on the recording

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was bathed in the warm, glittering light of giant crystal chandeliers. Chicago’s wealthiest elites, dressed in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns, clinked champagne glasses as classical violin music echoed softly across the marble floor.
Standing beside a central table was Luca Moretti. At thirty-eight, the feared Chicago Mafia boss possessed a commanding, terrifying presence. Tall, muscular, and impeccably tailored in a custom black suit and open-collar dress shirt, dark tattoos snaked up his neck, while his sharp, handsome jaw was set like iron.
Seated beside him in a customized pale-pink wheelchair was his seven-year-old daughter, Sophia. She wore an elegant pale-pink formal party dress, white socks, and white shoes, her light brown hair styled in a high curly bun. Standing behind her chair was Dr. Clare Benton, Sophia’s early-forty-year-old physical therapist. Dressed in a sophisticated dark dress, Clare kept a watchful, protective eye on her young patient.
Across the ballroom, thirty-one-year-old Hannah Carter stood near the service entrance. Dressed in her neat server uniform—a white blouse, fitted black skirt, name badge, and black heels—her soft brown hair tied in a loose bun, she balanced a heavy silver tray of wine glasses.
Suddenly, Sophia reached down and clicked open the side brakes of her pink wheelchair.
With painful, agonizing determination, the seven-year-old girl pushed herself upward, her small white shoes touching the marble floor.
Luca rose from his table in complete, breathless shock. Around the ballroom, conversations died as wealthy guests turned to stare in sheer disbelief.
Sophia took one shaky, trembling step forward. Then another. She wobbled on her weak legs, moving straight across the dining floor toward the waitress.
Hannah froze. The heavy silver tray slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the marble as wine glasses shattered. Without a second thought, Hannah dropped to her knees right in the middle of the ballroom, spreading her arms wide with tears spilling down her cheeks.
Sophia took three more desperate steps and collapsed safely into Hannah’s open arms.
The little girl threw her arms around the waitress’s neck, weeping against her white blouse.
Sophia (crying): “You kept your promise.”
Luca approached slowly, his broad chest heaving, his dark eyes wide with uncharacteristic vulnerability as he watched his daughter cling tightly to the hotel waitress.
Luca crouched down beside them on the marble floor. "Sophia... sweetie... who is this?"
Hannah looked up into the Mafia Don’s fierce, handsome face, her body trembling. "Mr. Moretti... three years ago, on the night of the storm near the river bridge... I was driving home from my shift. I saw your family's car go off the embankment into the water."
Luca’s breath locked in his chest. "You? You pulled her out?"
"I pulled her through the rear window before the car sank," Hannah whispered, stroking Sophia's curly bun. "I wrapped her in my coat and brought her to the emergency room. But when I tried to contact your family to check on her..."
Hannah reached into her server apron, pulling out an old, cracked smartphone. She opened her saved audio files and pressed play.
A cold, gravelly male voice echoed through the phone speaker:

Recorded Voice: “Never contact the Moretti family again.”
Luca’s expression instantly turned into a dark, terrifying mask of absolute fury. He recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to his own uncle and senior advisor—Dominic Moretti.
