Chapter 8

Kalista made the irreversible decision six weeks after the wedding.

She filed for annulment in the alternative and divorce if annulment grounds were not established.

The marriage had been legally valid.

Thatcher’s preexisting financial concealment might or might not satisfy the state’s narrow annulment requirements.

Naomi warned her not to build her future around winning that argument.

So the filing asked for divorce regardless.

Thatcher did not contest separation.

Then Kalista did something the Hale family feared more.

She signed a broad cooperation and preservation agreement.

Every wedding video in her possession.

Every message Thatcher sent her.

Every financial document Lenora shared.

Every email involving North Harbor that had legally reached her during wedding planning.

Everything went to:

The police where relevant.

The Hale Meridian special committee.

The lender investigators.

And regulators if counsel determined reporting was required.

No private family settlement could make the information disappear.

Lenora did the same.

Then she resigned from the family holdings committee temporarily and requested that her own decisions be audited too.

Sterling laughed when he heard.

“You’re auditing yourself?”

Lenora answered through counsel:

“Yes.”

That shut him up.

The special committee expanded its review to five years.

Related-party deals.

Executive expenses.

Family vendors.

Sterling.

Thatcher.

Lenora.

Anyone.

The decision cost them immediately.

Hale Meridian’s refinancing was delayed.

A planned Detroit hotel acquisition was postponed.

Bond investors asked questions.

Sterling blamed Lenora.

Thatcher blamed himself.

Then the audit found Lenora’s mistakes.

She had approved $46,000 in family-event expenses that should have been personal.

Repaid.

A company vehicle had been used for charitable work connected to her private foundation.

Allocation correction:

$18,700.

Repaid.

One hotel suite used during a family medical stay had been classified fully as business hospitality.

Correction:

$6,400.

Repaid.

Lenora signed every check without complaint.

The audit found Kalista had no company role and no financial issue beyond her own legal conduct.

Then it reached Thatcher.

His North Harbor conflict was much worse.

He had approved $740,000 of discounted Hale Meridian services benefiting his own venture without independent review.

Some had business justification.

Not enough.

The committee required repayment and referred the conflict for further legal analysis.

Thatcher resigned as development president.

Not temporarily.

He said:

“If I return someday, it should not be because my last name kept the chair warm.”

Sterling called him weak.

Thatcher did not answer.

May you like

The family structure began breaking apart.

For once, breaking was not the same thing as destruction.
