Chapter 1 - The Hidden Floorboard

The grand dining hall of the Bellacosta estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of three crystal chandeliers. Baccarat glass clinked against vintage champagne bottles, and the heavy aroma of slow-roasted meats mixed with expensive French perfume. Dozens of high-society figures, syndicate lieutenants, and corrupt politicians moved across the polished oak floor, all gathered for the long-awaited Bellacosta inheritance dinner.

Near the head of the long mahogany table stood Celeste Bellacosta. At thirty-nine, Victor’s sophisticated fiancée was a vision of ruthless elegance. Draped in an extravagant crimson evening gown that draped around her like liquid silk, she dripped with diamond earrings and a cascading diamond necklace that caught the light with every subtle breath. Her icy blue eyes scanned the room with calculating coldness.

Stepping quietly near the edge of the heavy oriental rug was eight-year-old Ellie Bellacosta. Victor’s daughter was pure innocence amidst a den of wolves. She wore a pale-lavender formal dress, a soft satin ribbon tied in her dark hair, and small leather flats. She clutched a tiny velvet pouch against her chest, her wide eyes looking for her father.

Celeste glided forward, her crimson heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood. When no guests were looking, she grabbed Ellie roughly by the shoulder, dragging the young girl into a quiet, shadowed alcove behind the head table.

"Aunt Celeste, you're hurting me!" Ellie whimpered, her small voice swallowed by the roaring laughter of the party.

"Quiet, you little brat," Celeste hissed under her breath.

With her foot, Celeste pulled back the corner of the heavy oriental rug, revealing a seamless wooden seam in the floorboards. She engaged a hidden brass latch. A concealed floor panel hinged upward, opening into a pitch-black, claustrophobic pit built into the foundation—a space designed decades ago for hiding contraband.

"Please, no! It's dark!" Ellie cried, tears welling in her eyes as she tried to pull back.

"No daughter, no inheritance," Celeste mocked with a cruel, venomous smile.

Without a shred of hesitation, Celeste shoved the child into the pit. Ellie tumbled down two wooden steps, crashing onto the cold, dusty sub-floor. Before she could scramble back up, Celeste slammed the heavy wooden panel shut above her. The lock clicked into place with a sickening finality.

Celeste kicked the rug back over the panel, adjusted her diamond necklace, and stepped smoothly back into the crowd, retrieving a glass of wine from a passing waiter.

Five minutes later, the double oak doors of the dining hall swung open.

Victor Bellacosta stepped into the room. At fifty-two, the legendary Mafia Boss commanded the entire hall without uttering a single word. Broad-shouldered, muscular, rugged, and deeply masculine, Victor radiated a terrifying, unyielding calm. He wore a custom midnight-black tuxedo, gold cufflinks gleaming at his wrists, a luxury watch, and polished leather shoes. Every eye in the room turned toward him in silent deference.

Victor’s sharp eyes scanned the room, looking for his daughter. She was supposed to be standing by his seat. Instead, the area near the head table was empty.

As Victor walked toward the head of the table, his polished leather shoe brushed against something small near the edge of the oriental rug. He stopped. He looked down.

Lying on the floorboards was a single, pale-lavender leather flat.

Victor’s expression didn't change, but the ambient temperature in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees. He slowly dropped to one knee, picking up his daughter's shoe. He swept the heavy oriental rug aside, exposing the polished oak wood.

He pressed his ear close to the floorboards.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Faint, desperate pounding echoed from beneath the wood.

Victor’s jaw set like iron. He slammed his fingers into the hidden brass latch and tore the concealed floor panel open with effortless, violent strength.

The bright chandelier light spilled into the dark pit. Down in the shadows, trembling and covered in dust, was Ellie.

"Daddy!" she sobbed, reaching her tiny arms upward.

Victor reached down with his massive, muscular arms, lifting Ellie out of the hole as if she weighed nothing at all. He pulled her flush against his broad chest, burying her small head into the lapel of his tailored black tuxedo.

"I've got you, princess," Victor murmured, his deep voice steady despite the roaring inferno in his chest. "You're safe."

Ellie pulled back slightly, her small hands trembling against his collar. "She said I had to disappear tonight," Ellie whispered, her voice cracking. "She said you weren't allowed to keep me."

Victor gently moved Ellie behind his broad frame, setting her safely behind his chief lieutenant, Marcus.

Victor turned around. He didn't yell. He didn't pull a weapon. He simply walked straight toward Celeste, his heavy footsteps echoing across the silent dining hall. The music died instantly. The three hundred guests froze in horror.

Celeste stood her ground, forcing an arrogant smile onto her crimson lips. "Victor, darling, she must have fallen—"

CRACK!

Victor brought his broad, heavy right palm across her face with terrifying force. The open-handed slap sounded like a rifle shot through the cavernous hall. The sheer power behind the blow sent Celeste staggering backward, her diamond earrings flying through the air as she crashed violently into the long inheritance table, sending silver platters and crystal glasses smashing to the floor.

Gasps reverberated through the room.

Celeste lay sprawled against the ruined table for a long second, her hair disheveled, a red imprint rapidly blooming across her fair cheek. Slowly, painfully, she pushed herself up using the edge of the mahogany table. She wiped a smear of blood from her lip with the back of her hand.

She didn't cry. Instead, she rose to her full height, her posture rigid, her eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated venom.

"Keep her alive, and your brother takes the empire," Celeste whispered, her raspy voice carrying across the silent room.

Victor stood perfectly still, his broad shoulders squared, his piercing gaze locking onto the family lawyer standing terrified across the room.

"My brother died ten years ago," Victor said, his voice ice-cold.

Celeste slowly, terrifyingly, smiled.
