Chapter 10 - The Crown and the Ashes

Arthur Vance sat frozen beneath Victor’s iron grip, tears of sheer panic welling behind his glasses.

"Victor... please!" Arthur choked out, his voice cracking. "Don Carmine was dying! He was paranoid! He ordered me to create a backdoor mechanism so he could strip your power if you ever stepped out of line!"

"And when my father died," Victor said coldly, "you realized that by manipulating Celeste and Falcone, you could trigger the midnight clause yourself and take control of the multi-billion-dollar foundation."

"I gave thirty years of my life to your family!" Arthur wept. "I built your legal empire! And you treated me like a servant!"

"You were a servant, Arthur," Victor stated flatly. "And a servant doesn't steal from the master's table."

Victor signaled to Marcus, who stepped into the room with two armed bodyguards.

"Take Arthur to the lower docks," Victor commanded smoothly. "Put him on a boat to Europe. If he ever sets foot in North America again, end him."

"Victor! No! Please!" Arthur screamed as the bodyguards hauled him out of the suite, his cries fading down the long carpeted corridor until total silence returned.

Victor stood alone in the executive suite, adjusting his midnight-black tuxedo jacket and gold cufflinks. He walked over to the velvet sofa, looking down at his sleeping daughter.

Ellie stirred softly, her small hand reaching out from beneath the wool blanket. Victor crouched down, taking her tiny fingers in his broad, calloused palm.

"It's over, princess," Victor whispered softly, kissing her forehead. "The kingdom is yours."

Ellie opened her wide brown eyes sleepily, offering a tiny, radiant smile. "I knew you'd save me, Daddy."

Victor lifted her into his broad arms, holding her close against his chest as they walked out of the suite toward the private elevator, surrounded by six loyal bodyguards.

An hour later, Victor returned to his private study at the Bellacosta estate.

The grand room was quiet, illuminated by the warm amber light of the crackling fireplace. The ruined floorboard had been repaired, the dark mahogany desk wiped clean, and the heavy velvet curtains drawn against the quiet night air.

Victor set sleeping Ellie down on the plush sofa in the corner of the study, wrapping her in a fresh silk blanket.

He walked over to his massive mahogany desk, pulling out a heavy gold key from his vest pocket. He walked over to his father's antique floor safe hidden behind the Roman history bookshelf, unlocked the heavy steel door, and pulled out a sealed black envelope that sat on the top shelf.

The envelope was stamped with a fresh wax seal bearing the crest of the Bellacosta family in Sicily.

Victor tore the seal open, pulling out a single sheet of heavy parchment written in fresh black ink.

As his eyes scanned the lines of text, his expression hardened into razor-sharp focus.

The letter read:

Victor,

If you are reading this, it means you survived Celeste and Arthur's betrayal in New York. But the bloodline clause was never about the American trust. Your mother's family in Palermo has just activated the primary succession protocol. The true heir to the Sicilian throne has been summoned.

And her name is Ellie.

May you like

Victor slowly folded the letter, sliding it into his breast pocket. A calm, terrifying smirk touched his rugged face as he looked over at his sleeping daughter, his broad posture returning to that of an invincible king ready for the next war.

He reached out, clicked off the banker's lamp, and sat beside his daughter in the warm firelight, guarding his bloodline into the dawn.
