Chapter 1 - the whisper on the marble stairs

The grand ballroom of the Kane estate hummed with the quiet, expensive murmur of Chicago's elite. Crystal chandeliers cast warm, golden light across polished marble floors, reflecting the tailored tuxedos of syndicate bosses and the designer gowns of high-society wives. At sixty-four, Vittorio Kane commanded the room without uttering a single word. Broad-shouldered, impeccably tailored in a black Italian suit, and wearing a heavy gold signet ring on his right hand, he exuded an aura of absolute authority.
Near the top of the grand sweeping staircase stood Bianca, his thirty-nine-year-old fiancée. Dressed in a breathtaking ivory designer gown with cascading diamond earrings, she looked every bit the future mistress of Lake Shore Drive. But her pale blue eyes were fixed with quiet malice on an eight-year-old girl in a pale-blue party dress.
Maisy Kane was adjusting the white ribbon in her light-brown hair when Bianca stepped close behind her.
Without warning, Bianca's manicured hand clamped hard onto the little girl's shoulder, giving her a sudden, forceful shove. Maisy lost her footing on the slick marble edge and tumbled down several carpeted steps with a frightened cry.
Bianca stood at the top, her posture regal, her lips curling into a cold, barely audible whisper. "Stop getting in my way."
Before the child could hit the bottom landing, a heavy shadow moved with terrifying speed. Vittorio charged up from below, his broad frame sweeping forward as he caught Maisy in mid-air, pulling his shaking daughter tightly against his broad chest.
Maisy buried her face into her father's crisp white shirt, her fingers clutching his lapels with desperate strength. "Dad!" she sobbed, her small body trembling violently.
Vittorio held her close, his large hand stroking her hair as his rugged face turned to stone. His eyes raged with a sudden, dangerous fire that instantly silenced the surrounding guests in the foyer.
Maisy lifted her tear-streaked face, clinging to his neck, and pointed her small hand toward the top of the stairs. "She said you’d choose her."
Vittorio gently handed Maisy over to his oldest lieutenant and trusted family friend, Leo, who stepped up immediately to shelter the child. Then Vittorio turned. He walked up the marble staircase, each heavy, deliberate footfall echoing like a drumbeat of approaching doom.
He stopped inches from Bianca. His broad chest rose and fell, his presence so immense and suffocating that Bianca’s smug expression wavered for a fraction of a second.
"You touched my daughter," Vittorio said, his deep voice carrying a low, lethal fury that chilled the air between them.
Bianca lifted her chin, her diamond earrings catching the light as she forced a slow, poisonous smile. She stepped in so close her ivory dress brushed his suit, her voice dropping to a quiet threat that only Vittorio could hear.
"Leave me," Bianca whispered smoothly, "and I tell her who really killed her mother."
Vittorio froze. The terrifying rage in his eyes turned into an ice-cold, stunned stillness. Down at the landing, Maisy stared up at her father through her tears, sensing the sudden shift in the air.

"You were there that night?" Vittorio asked, his voice barely a breath.
Bianca’s smile slowly widened, her pale eyes dancing with cold triumph as she watched the most powerful man in Chicago crumble under her leverage.
