Chapter 3 - the silver key in the music box

By 2:00 AM, the mansion was entirely quiet. Rain washed against the tall arched windows of the master suite, blurring the city lights of Chicago into smudged streaks of yellow and white.

Vittorio sat on the edge of the large four-poster bed in the room he had shared with his late wife, Elena. He held the tiny silver key between his thumb and forefinger.

Opposite him, sitting on the velvet vanity, was Elena’s old wooden music box—a hand-carved antique brought from Sicily decades ago. For eight years, the box had sat undisturbed, a silent monument to a woman whose loss still hollowed out Vittorio's chest every single night.

He turned the music box over. On the bottom panel, hidden beneath a layer of felt, was a small brass lock stamped with the exact same Roman numeral IV.

Vittorio inserted the tiny silver key. It turned with a crisp, clear click.

The bottom panel slid open, revealing a folded piece of heavy yellowed parchment and a small black bank ledger. Vittorio unfolded the parchment first. It was a hand-written letter in Elena’s delicate, sweeping cursive, dated two days before her fatal car crash.

If you are reading this, Vittorio, it means I failed to reach the harbor in time. They know I have the ledger. They know Bianca has been sending information to the Chicago outfit from inside our home. Do not trust the engagement ring she wears—it is not a gift of love, but a marker of ownership.

Vittorio’s chest heaved. He opened the small black ledger. Page after page was filled with dates, offshore bank accounts, and wire transfers totaling millions of dollars—signed by a pseudonym that matched Bianca’s maiden name.

A soft rustle of fabric sounded near the doorway. Vittorio looked up to see Maisy standing in her nightgown, holding a small stuffed bear against her side.

"Dad?" she asked quietly, her eyes wide in the doorway. "Why are you looking at Mommy's box?"

Vittorio quickly closed the ledger, setting it aside as he opened his arms to his daughter. "Come here, sweetie."

Maisy walked across the room and climbed onto the bed, nestling into her father's side. "Mommy used to hide small notes in that box when she thought I was sleeping," Maisy murmured, resting her head against his broad chest. "She said if anything ever happened, the lady in the white dress would try to take her place."

Vittorio froze, stroking his daughter's brown hair. "Mommy said that to you?"

May you like

"Yes," Maisy whispered softly. "And she said the lady in white has a notebook hidden under the floor in the conservatory."

Vittorio looked toward the window, the rain pouring heavily outside as a dark, dangerous plan began to take shape in his mind.
