Chapter 25 - Evelina After Probation

Evelina completed probation without violation.
No contact with Hattie outside the one approved letter.
No attempts through friends.
No appearing at school.
No surprise gifts.
No online commentary about adoption.
Her conviction remained part of her record under the plea.
She continued therapy.
I knew only what came through counsel when final compliance documents were filed.
She sold the apartment we had once planned to use during city weekends.
Moved to Boston.
Worked for an art-and-hospitality foundation.
Not directly with children.
No campaign from me to ruin her career.
Some relatives wanted one.
I refused.
The boundary was:
Evelina does not get access to Hattie.
It was not:
Evelina must lose every future opportunity.
Years after the incident, my sister unexpectedly saw her at an industry conference.
Diana told me:
“She looked different.”
“How?”
“Less polished.”
I did not know what that meant.
“Did you speak?”
“Five minutes.”
“What did she say?”
“She asked if Hattie was okay.”
“What did you answer?”
“Yes.
Then Diana said:
“She didn’t ask to send anything.”
That mattered.
People often prove change not by what they do, but by what they finally stop demanding.
I did not forgive Evelina in some ceremonial way.
I stopped thinking about whether forgiveness was required.
Anger faded.
Boundary remained.
May you like
That was enough.
