Chapter 1 - The festive betrayal

The grand ballroom of the Romano estate looked like a scene pulled directly from a cinematic holiday masterpiece. Bright, golden lights cascaded from the vaulted ceilings, casting a warm, luxurious glow over the gathered elite. A giant Christmas tree towered in the center of the room, adorned with heavy crystal ornaments and thick velvet ribbons. The air smelled of expensive pine, melting candle wax, and the rich perfume of the guests. Everywhere you looked, wealthy American families mingled, their fair, rosy skin illuminated by the flickering candlelight.

In the center of this breathtaking display stood the Romano family, gathering for their annual formal portrait. Damian Romano, a deeply masculine and intimidatingly calm man, was briefly speaking with his associates across the room. He wore a perfectly tailored midnight-black tuxedo that accentuated his rugged, athletic build. A luxury wristwatch caught the golden light as he moved.

Near the Christmas tree, his seven-year-old daughter, Holly, stood waiting. She was sweet and undeniably adorable, wearing an elegant red velvet Christmas dress, pristine white tights, and shiny flats. A satin ribbon held back her soft curls. She smiled at the photographer, trying to be perfectly behaved.

But standing next to her was Vivienne, Damian’s glamorous forty-year-old fiancée. Vivienne was a vision of calculating elegance, her fair skin glowing against her luxurious silver Christmas gown. Heavy diamond earrings and a matching bracelet sparkled with every movement. But beneath her sophisticated exterior lay a vicious arrogance.

When the photographer looked away to adjust his lens, Vivienne’s polite smile vanished. She leaned down, her manicured hands suddenly grabbing Holly by the arm. With a sharp, cruel yank, she pulled the little girl out of the portrait arrangement and shoved her backward. Holly stumbled, her small hands failing to catch her balance, and crashed into a towering stack of decorative, oversized gift boxes.

You do not belong in this family, Vivienne hissed, smiling viciously down at the child.

The sound of tumbling boxes caught the attention of the room. Damian strode into the clearing, the crowd parting for him instantly. He stopped, his sharp eyes taking in the scene. Holly was sitting among the crushed golden paper and fallen velvet ribbons, her rosy cheeks flushed as she tried desperately to hold back her tears.

Holly didn't wait. She scrambled to her feet, running straight to Damian and hiding behind his strong legs. She pointed a small, trembling finger toward the woman in the silver gown.

She said I’ll have to leave after Christmas, Holly sobbed, her voice echoing in the sudden silence of the ballroom.

Damian did not shout. He did not lose his temper. The terrifying thing about the mafia boss was his suffocating calmness. He gently moved Holly entirely behind his back, shielding her. He took slow, deliberate strides straight toward Vivienne. Before she could speak, he reached over to her VIP chair, grabbed the large, heavy decorative pine wreath resting on the back, and draped it roughly over her shoulders.

Then, with a lightning-fast motion, his large hand struck her cheek. The slap echoed like a gunshot. The force knocked Vivienne completely off her high heels, sending her crashing backward into the exact same pile of decorative boxes she had pushed Holly into.

Vivienne scrambled to her feet amid the ruined decorations. A dark, angry bruise was already forming on her fair, rosy cheek. She was furious, humiliated in front of the most powerful people in the city. Her eyes burned with venom as she glared at him.

If you keep that girl here, her mother’s secret will be buried forever, Vivienne spat venomously, adjusting her ruined silver gown.

Damian’s expression turned ice-cold. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. He stepped closer, towering over her.

Then who was behind my wife’s death? Damian asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

Vivienne simply flashed a dangerous, knowing smile, the diamonds on her ears glittering under the festive lights.
