Chapter 10 - A new dawn

The cinematic, bright Christmas colors finally returned. It was Christmas morning. The Romano mansion had been entirely restored overnight. The shattered doors were replaced, the grand halls cleaned, and the golden lights sparkled warmly against the fresh snow falling outside the massive windows. The giant Christmas tree stood proudly in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by perfectly wrapped presents.

Damian sat in a plush leather armchair by the roaring fireplace, wearing a comfortable dark sweater. The dark, intimidating mafia boss from the night before was gone, replaced by a peaceful, devoted father.

Holly sat on the floor, wearing a cozy new set of red pajamas, tearing into a large box with joyful excitement. The nightmare at the docks seemed like a distant, fading memory to her. She pulled out a beautiful, intricate wooden dollhouse, gasping in pure delight.

Thank you, Daddy! she cheered, running over to give him a tight hug.

Damian smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. He kissed the top of her head. Anything for you, sweet girl. Merry Christmas.

Marcus stood quietly by the grand double doors, holding a cup of coffee. He caught Damian’s eye and gave a small, respectful nod. The syndicate had been crushed. The offshore accounts were secured. Vivienne was gone forever, vanished into the freezing depths of an anonymous cargo ship. The Romano empire was entirely secure.

But as Holly went back to playing with her new dollhouse, Damian noticed something out of place. Tucked underneath the lowest branches of the giant Christmas tree was a small, perfectly wrapped silver box. It had no tag. It had no ribbon.

Damian’s instincts immediately flared. He stood up, gently moving Holly away from the tree.

Wait here, princess, Damian said softly.

He walked over and picked up the silver box. It was heavy. He carefully peeled back the wrapping paper. Inside was a sleek, black velvet jewelry case. He popped the lid open.

Resting on a bed of white silk was an incredibly rare, antique diamond ring. But it wasn't just any ring. Damian recognized it instantly. It was the signet ring belonging to the original founder of the Chicago syndicate, a man who had supposedly died twenty years ago.

Tucked beneath the ring was a small, crisp white card. Damian pulled it out. Written in elegant, fountain-pen cursive was a single, terrifying sentence.

You handled the traitor well, Damian, but the debt for your wife's life is still unpaid.

Damian’s jaw clenched. The cinematic warmth of the room suddenly felt cold. Vivienne hadn't been the mastermind. She had just been a pawn in a much, much larger game.

He walked to the massive window, looking out through the falling snow toward the iron gates of his estate. Idling quietly at the edge of the property, barely visible through the blizzard, was a long, black luxury car. As Damian watched, the car slowly turned around and disappeared into the whiteout.

May you like

Damian crushed the white card in his fist. He looked back at Holly, who was laughing and arranging furniture in her dollhouse, completely innocent to the darkness surrounding them.

The battle was over. But the war had just begun.
