Chapter 9

The grand foyer felt as quiet as a tomb. Daniel stood motionless, his heavy leather shoes planted firmly on the marble floor, his large hand holding the unseen contents of the purse tightly against his side. His mind was racing, connecting three years of hidden lies, unexplained financial discrepancies, and the sudden, aggressive onset of his late wife’s illness. The piece of evidence in his hand wasn't just a revelation; it was an indictment of murder.
Lily looked up at her father, her big blue eyes filled with innocent confusion. She reached out with her tiny hand, gently tugging on the hem of his tailored black suit jacket.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered softly, her voice breaking the heavy silence. "Is Mommy's letter bad?"
Daniel took a slow, shuddering breath, forcing his shattered composure back into place. He looked down at his five-year-old daughter, his expression instantly shifting from horrified disbelief to absolute, fierce devotion. He slipped the contents of the purse safely into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, right over his heart.
"No, baby," Daniel said, his voice quiet, low, and smooth as silk, though his jaw remained tightly clenched. "Mommy's letter is a miracle. She just saved us."
He crouched down once more, picking up the silver tiara from the floor. He gently placed it back onto Lily’s golden-blonde curls, smoothing her hair with his large, tattooed hand.
"Go upstairs with your nanny now, sweetie," Daniel instructed softly, kissing her pale, rosy cheek. "Daddy has to take care of something down here."
Lily nodded obediently, holding her pink floral handbag tightly against her pale-yellow princess gown. She cast one quick, fearful glance at Victoria weeping on the floor before turning and running up the grand marble staircase toward the safety of the east wing.
Daniel slowly stood up to his full height. He adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket, his luxury watch catching the warm light of the crystal chandelier. He turned his attention fully to the woman kneeling on the floor.
Victoria looked up, her elaborate blonde updo completely ruined, her mascara running down her pale cheeks in dark streaks. The arrogant, manipulative socialite was entirely gone, replaced by a broken, terrified woman who knew her life was over.

"Daniel... please," Victoria sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand toward him. "It... it isn't what you think! I was forced into it! They threatened me!"
"Shut your mouth," Daniel commanded. The words were spoken softly, but they carried the weight of an absolute death sentence.
