Chapter 6

Elias expected Ethan to relax immediately.
He did not.
The first night, Ethan asked:
“Can I lock my door?”
Elias answered:
“Yes.”
Then realized the bedroom door did not have a working lock.
He fixed it before dinner.
The second night, Ethan spilled milk.
He froze.
Elias reached for a towel.
Ethan stepped backward.
That broke something in him.
Not loudly.
Elias simply handed him the towel.
“Milk costs less than fear.”
Ethan looked confused.
Then started crying.
Elias did not hug him until Ethan moved closer first.
The therapist later told him:
“You’re doing better than many people.”
Elias answered:
“I’m seventy. I’ve had time to mess up enough things to recognize one.”
One of those things was David.
Elias had raised his son hard.
Not violently.
But hard.
Work first.
Feelings later.
When David’s first wife died, Elias visited often but rarely asked questions he considered private.
When David married Miranda, Elias felt relieved.
A competent woman.
A nurse.
A household restored.
He stopped looking closely.
Now he was looking at everything.
Ethan’s school backpack contained a folded sheet of paper.
Not hidden carefully.
Just forgotten beneath notebooks.
Title:
GUARDIAN REVIEW — QUESTIONS TO PRACTICE
Elias did not read farther.
He called Ethan.
“This yours?”
Ethan went pale.
“Miranda wrote it.”
Elias handed it over.
“You want me to see?”
After a pause, Ethan nodded.
The page contained questions:
Do you feel safe at home?
Do you want Miranda to remain your guardian?
Would moving to Elias disrupt school?
Does Elias have medical limitations?
Does Miranda support your relationship with extended family?
Under each:
Suggested answers.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes, significantly.
He has hip problems and tires easily.
Yes, always.
The final line:
Do not mention arguments unless specifically asked.
Elias looked at Ethan.
“Did a lawyer write this?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“She made me practice.”
“How many times?”
“A lot.”
Elias’s voice softened.
“What happened if you gave a different answer?”
Ethan stared at the floor.
“She’d start over.”
“And if you still gave a different answer?”
Silence.
Then:
“That’s when she’d grab me.”
Clue number two.
This was not simply about Miranda losing her temper during household arguments.
She was preparing Ethan for a court interview.
Then another page appeared.
A weekly checklist.
Homework.
Medication.
Chores.
And:
Court language — 20 min
Every Sunday for eight weeks.
Elias photographed nothing himself.
He called Ethan’s lawyer.
The original documents went into counsel’s possession.

He had learned one lesson quickly.
Being furious did not make him the evidence technician.
