Chapter 9

Miranda’s phone became important after investigators obtained the necessary legal authority.
Most messages were ordinary.
Hospital scheduling.
Coworkers.
Bills.
Family.
Then they found a note folder.
Not hidden behind encryption.
Simply titled:
Review
Inside were drafts.
E says G house feels cramped.
E concerned about G age.
E wants stability through graduation.
No indication Ethan had actually said those things.
Then:
If court asks about bruises — basketball / skateboard / clumsy.
Investigators compared creation dates.
That line had been written before Elias discovered the bruises.
Miranda’s attorney argued nurses often documented possible explanations because Ethan was physically active.
Maybe.
Then another entry:
Do not let E speak to Jennings alone before review.
Mrs. Jennings.
The school counselor.
Created the day after Ethan told the counselor he wanted to live with Elias.
Clue number four.
Then:
House question: emphasize David’s intent was continuity.
And:
If E leaves, trustee will force sale? Ask Lauren.
Another note:
Cannot lose residence before hospital schedule stabilizes.
That line shifted the investigation.
Miranda had reduced her nursing hours after David’s death.
She had recently been offered a full-time supervisory position.
The hours required long days.
She had declined.
Coworkers said she repeatedly complained:
“If Ethan leaves, everything changes.”
They assumed grief.
One coworker remembered:
“She said David left her with a house that wasn’t really hers.”
Then the bank trustee produced correspondence.
Miranda had been told clearly:
If Ethan permanently relocated and a successor guardian was appointed, she would likely need to vacate after a reasonable transition period.
She replied:
Removing me would defeat David’s stated intention to preserve family stability.
Lauren responded:
The trust exists for Ethan’s benefit, not to guarantee housing for any adult.
Miranda never replied.
Then investigators found something more revealing.
An appointment on Miranda’s calendar.
Monday, 10:30 a.m.
Immediately after the guardianship review.
Mortgage consult — purchase house from trust
She had scheduled a lender meeting assuming she would leave court as guardian.
The lender’s prequalification notes said:
Applicant seeking acquisition from minor beneficiary trust; occupancy currently contingent upon guardianship.
Miranda knew exactly what was at stake.
Still, the picture was incomplete.
She could have wanted to buy the house lawfully.
Wanting housing security did not explain why she needed Ethan rehearsed so aggressively.
Then the guardian ad litem obtained a voicemail Miranda left herself after an argument with Ethan.
Her own voice:
“He only has to get through Monday. Once the review is done, I have another year.”
She exhaled.
Then:
“After that, he’ll be sixteen and calmer.”
The recording ended.
One year.
Why exactly one year?
The guardianship review schedule.
Annual.
Miranda was not trying to win Ethan forever.

She was trying to survive one hearing.
