Chapter 3 - the stolen ledgers

By six o'clock that evening, a heavy autumn rain began to hammer against the high glass windows of the Moretti estate. Thunder rumbled softly in the distance, casting long shadows across the grand master study on the second floor.

Dominic sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his dark dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his suit jacket draped over the leather executive chair. Spread out across the desk were three decades of estate ledgers, bank statements, and security logs.

Sitting on the plush leather sofa near the marble fireplace were Anna and four-year-old Lily. Lily had eaten a warm meal prepared personally by the estate chef and was now fast asleep, her pale-yellow dress smoothed over her lap, her small hand holding her stuffed rabbit.

Anna sat quietly beside her daughter, sipping a cup of hot tea that Dominic had ordered for her. Her fair skin looked soft under the lamplight, though her eyes were filled with lingering anxiety.

Dominic picked up a sleek fountain pen, reviewing the final page of Norah’s audit.

"The total amount embezzled from the estate over the past four years exceeds two point four million dollars, Anna," Dominic revealed, his deep, gravelly voice filling the quiet room. "Evelyn wasn't just stealing from your salary. She was siphoning funds from the staff healthcare trust, the security maintenance accounts, and the property restoration reserves."

Anna set her tea cup down on the saucer with a soft clatter. "Mr. Moretti... why would she risk everything? You gave her total authority over this estate."

"Because she wasn't working alone," Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto Anna’s face with razor-sharp intensity. "Apex Holdings belongs to Richard Vance. He’s been using Evelyn to bleed my household accounts to fund his illegal weapon shipments along the Illinois river."

Dominic paused, leaning forward over his desk, resting his broad hands on the wood. "There’s something else, Anna. Why did you really come to work at my estate eighteen months ago?"

Anna froze. Her hands clenched in her lap, her breath catching in her throat. She looked from Dominic's fierce, handsome face down to her sleeping daughter.

"When I applied for the job," Anna whispered, her voice trembling, "I was running from my ex-husband, Thomas Reed. He was an associate of Richard Vance. When Thomas went to prison three years ago for illegal arms trafficking, Vance’s men came after me, claiming Thomas owed them half a million dollars."

Tears spilled over Anna’s fair cheeks as she continued. "I brought Lily here because I knew the Moretti name was the only thing in Chicago that Vance was terrified of. I thought if we stayed inside these walls, we would be invisible."

Dominic stood up slowly from his desk. His broad frame towered in the warm lamplight as he walked around the desk and crouched down in front of Anna. He reached out, his broad, calloused hand gently wiping a tear from her cheek. His touch was surprisingly soft, devoid of the cold terror he usually projected to the world.

"You are not invisible here, Anna," Dominic murmured gently, his deep voice thick with an unshakeable promise. "And as long as you and Lily are under this roof, no one touches either of you. Is that understood?"

Anna looked into his intense dark eyes, feeling a profound, overwhelming wave of relief wash over her heart for the first time in four years.

"Understood, Mr. Moretti," she whispered.

Suddenly, the security intercom on Dominic's desk buzzed sharply. Norah’s frantic voice boomed through the speaker:

"Don Moretti! A black armored SUV just pulled up to the front security gate! Richard Vance is standing at the intercom demanding to speak with you!"
