Chapter 5 - the inner betrayal

By eight o'clock the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, clear autumn sun shining over the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate.

Inside the grand dining room, four-year-old Lily sat at the head of the long mahogany table on a plush booster cushion. She wore a fresh pale-yellow dress with a matching ribbon in her hair, happily eating a plate of chocolate chip pancakes that the family chef had prepared personally for her.

Sitting beside her was Anna, wearing a simple cream sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed and radiant.

Dominic walked into the room wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a white dress shirt. Instead of sitting at his usual solitary spot at the far end of the table, he pulled out the leather chair directly across from Lily and sat down.

Lily looked up from her pancakes, holding her stuffed rabbit up toward him. "Mr. Moretti! Look! Chef Marco made my rabbit out of pancake batter!"

Dominic looked at the small pancake rabbit on her plate, a rare, genuine smile touching his rugged features. "That's very impressive, Lily. Did you eat your strawberries?"

"Yes," Lily beamed, pointing her small fork at her clean fruit bowl. "Mommy said strawberries make my leg strong."

Dominic’s eyes softened as he looked at the little girl. He looked up at Anna, motioning toward the private terrace outside. "Anna, step outside with me for a moment."

Anna nodded, kissing Lily’s forehead before following Dominic out onto the sunlit stone terrace overlooking the estate garden.

Dominic handed Anna a thick leather folder stamped with the official seal of the Illinois State Supreme Court.

"What is this, Mr. Moretti?" Anna asked, opening the folder with hesitant fingers.

"Thirty years ago, your father, Arthur Carter, was a primary founding partner of the Chicago Maritime Logistics Corporation," Dominic explained, his deep voice calm and solid. "When he died twenty years ago, his forty percent share of the company was illegally transferred using forged power-of-attorney documents."

Anna’s eyes widened in sheer shock as she scanned the financial deeds inside the folder. "My father's shares?"

"The forgery was executed by Evelyn Crane and Richard Vance," Dominic revealed. "They stole your family’s inheritance, kept you in poverty, and forced you into domestic service so you would never have the financial resources to investigate your father's estate."

Anna covered her mouth, tears of absolute shock spilling down her fair cheeks. "All those years... we were struggling to pay for Lily's leg brace... and they were sitting on my father's fortune?"

"The shares have been legally frozen by my attorneys as of two hours ago, Anna," Dominic said gently, reaching out to take her hand in his broad palm. "You are not a housekeeper anymore. You are the rightful co-owner of a sixty-million-dollar maritime logistics enterprise."

Anna looked up into his intense dark eyes, her heart swelling with an overwhelming wave of love and gratitude. "Dominic... I don't know how to thank you."

"You don't need to thank me, Anna," Dominic murmured softly, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles. "And starting next week, the top pediatric orthopedic team from Johns Hopkins Hospital will be arriving here to perform a minor corrective procedure on Lily’s leg. In six months, she won't need that brace anymore."

Anna sobbed with pure joy, throwing her arms around Dominic's broad neck, holding him tightly as the morning sun bathed the terrace in golden light.
