Chapter 6 - Cracks in the Syndicate

By 4:00 AM, the rain had tapered off into a thick, low-hanging mist that enveloped the grounds in a ghostly haze.

Roman sat in the armored SUV parked near the estate gates, his tactical radio humming with quiet static. His men were already in position near the Genoa highway tunnel, waiting for the Valenti strike team to walk directly into the ambush.

"Boss, team one is in position," his captain reported through the headset. "Target vehicles are approaching the tunnel entrance."

"Hold fire until all three cars enter the choke point," Roman ordered coldly. "Capture Marco alive. I want him brought back to the lake house."

"Understood, boss."

Roman turned off the radio, feeling a rare moment of relief. The betrayal that had threatened his empire for months was finally coming to an end.

Suddenly, his personal cell phone rang. It was an unlisted internal number from the estate.

Roman answered immediately. "Speak."

"Mr. Moretti!" Grace's voice came through the speaker, hysterical and laced with sheer panic. "They took her! Someone broke into the panic room!"

Roman’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about? That door is steel-reinforced!"

"They had a master override card!" Grace sobbed frantically. "A man in a dark rain jacket... he dragged Mia out while the guards were checking the perimeter! He left a note on the table!"

Roman slammed his foot on the accelerator, turning the heavy SUV around in a spray of gravel and racing back up the long winding driveway toward the mansion.

He burst through the front doors three minutes later, his gun drawn, his face a mask of terrifying fury. He stormed down to the wine cellar and found Grace on her knees beside the open vault door, clutching a torn piece of red fabric from Mia's dress.

"Grace!" Roman knelt beside her, checking her for injuries. "Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine, but Mia... oh God, Roman, they took my baby!" Grace cried, clutching Roman's jacket sleeves with desperate strength. "Please, you have to save her!"

Roman picked up the white piece of paper lying on the stone floor. Written on it in typed black ink was a brief message:

If you want the girl back, cancel the Genoa ambush and bring the metal box from Marco's room to the abandoned glass factory on the north shore alone. You have sixty minutes.

Roman gripped the paper so tightly it crumpled in his fist. Marco had anticipated the trap. He had used the Genoa leak as a distraction to draw Roman's main security force away from the estate, leaving Grace and Mia vulnerable.

Grace looked up into Roman's eyes, her tears spilling over her pale cheeks. "Who is doing this to us? Why Mia?"

Roman reached down, grabbed Grace by the shoulders, and pulled her gently to her feet. "Look at me, Grace."

She looked at him, her body trembling uncontrollably.

"I give you my word as a Moretti," Roman said, his voice deep, solid, and utterly unshakeable. "I will bring Mia back without a single scratch on her. And the man who touched her will not live to see the sun rise."

May you like

Grace nodded slowly, choosing in that dark moment to place her full, terrifying trust in the most dangerous man in Italy.

Roman pulled the DIA metal box from beneath his coat, turned around, and walked out into the fog.
