Chapter 8 - The Golden Cage

Before Marco could process Roman's words, Roman raised his heavy silver ring into the air—a signal.

A high-powered rifle shot shattered the glass ceiling above!

A sniper round from Roman's hidden marksman outside tore through the decayed wooden floorboards right between Marco's feet. The dry timber splintered violently, the weight of the heavy machinery above causing the floor section beneath Marco's mercenaries to collapse with a deafening roar!

The two Valenti mercenaries plummeted fifteen feet down into the churning, icy waters of Lake Como below, screaming as they vanished into the foam.

Marco stumbled backward, losing his balance as the floorboards buckled beneath him. He fired two wild shots into the ceiling, dust and plaster raining down like white snow.

In a split second, Roman charged forward like a storm. He closed the distance in three massive strides, diving across the breaking floor and grabbing Mia from the wooden chair just as the structure caved in.

Roman twisted his body in mid-air, wrapping his heavy arms tightly around Mia to protect her from the impact as they hit the solid stone catwalk near the edge of the pier.

Mia didn't scream. She buried her face into Roman's navy suit jacket, holding onto his lapels with all her tiny strength.

Roman rolled to his feet instantly, checking her over with swift, practiced eyes. "Are you hurt, little one?"

Mia shook her head, pulling her face back. "I told you he was hiding under the floor."

Roman let out a rare, faint breath of a smile. "You did."

Behind them, Marco clawed his way onto the remaining iron beam, bleeding from a gash on his forehead. His sleek hair was matted with water and dirt, his polished suit ruined. He reached for his fallen pistol lying three feet away on the edge of the drop.

Roman set Mia down behind a reinforced concrete pillar. "Stay here, Mia. Don't look."

Roman turned and walked toward Marco. His presence was overwhelming, a figure of absolute judgment moving through the dust and haze.

Marco grabbed the gun, scrambled to his knees, and pointed it at Roman's chest with trembling hands. "Stay back! I'll shoot! I swear to God I'll shoot you, Roman!"

Roman didn't slow down. He didn't draw his own weapon. He kept walking straight toward the barrel of the gun, his dark eyes completely devoid of fear.

"You betrayed your family, Marco," Roman said, each word heavy as lead. "You murdered an innocent man. And you threatened a child."

Marco fired.

The gunshot echoed wildly through the cavernous space. But Marco's hands were shaking so violently that the bullet grazed Roman's left shoulder, tearing through the fine fabric of his suit without touching skin.

Roman didn't even flinch. He reached Marco in a single step, grabbed the barrel of the pistol with his bare hand, twisted it backward with crushing strength, and disarmed Marco in less than a second.

The gun clattered across the stone floor and tumbled into the dark lake below.

Roman grabbed Marco by the lapels of his ruined dark coat, lifting the man off his feet and pinning him against the concrete wall above the drop.

"Please... Roman, brother... please," Marco gasped, his eyes wide with absolute, terrifying realization. "We were brothers... remember Milan? Remember what we built?"

"My brothers don't hurt children," Roman said softly.

With a final, devastating effort, Roman shoved Marco back. The rusted iron railing gave way, and Marco fell backward into the cold, churning dark of the lake below, vanishing into the white water as the storm roared outside.

Silence returned to the factory, broken only by the sound of the rain against the roof.

Roman took a deep breath, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked back to the concrete pillar where Mia was sitting patiently with her colored pencils.
