Chapter 4 - the hidden ledger

The quiet in the study was absolute as the heavy lid of the steel box swung back.
Inside lay a thick, leather-bound journal wrapped in dark oiled silk, along with a stack of old yellowed photographs.
Roman reached into the box with steady hands, removing the journal first. As he untied the silk string, a small photograph slipped out from between the pages, fluttering down onto the dark mahogany desk.
Roman picked it up. His jaw set so hard that a muscle twitched along his jawline.
The photograph showed a young Graham Pierce standing near the docks twenty years ago. Beside him stood a beautiful young woman with dark brown hair and laughing eyes—Elena Vale. But what made Roman’s blood run cold was the man standing directly behind them in the shadows: Julian Vance, the ruthless head of the rival Chicago syndicate who had tried to destroy the Vale family for decades.
"He didn't just betray me today," Roman whispered, his deep voice thick with lethal realization. "He was working with Chicago before my father even handed me the estate."
Megan leaned forward slightly from her chair, her eyes catching the date written on the back of the photograph in faded blue ink: October 14, 2004.
"Mr. Vale..." Megan said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "That date..."
Roman turned his head sharply toward her. "What about it?"
"My... my mother used to work for the Vance estate in Chicago twenty years ago," Megan revealed, her face draining of color as a sudden, terrible memory surfaced. "She left Chicago in a hurry the exact same month. She never told me why. She just took me, moved us out West, and told me never to look back."
Roman walked slowly over to her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense scrutiny. "Your mother worked for Julian Vance?"
"She was a kitchen supervisor," Megan stammered, pulling Sadie closer into her lap. "She died four years ago, right after Sadie was born. But before she died, she gave me a small wooden box and told me to hide it... she said it contained proof of a terrible crime committed by a man named Pierce."
The atmosphere in the room transformed instantly. The loose threads of a twenty-year-old tragedy were suddenly weaving themselves into a terrifying web right in front of them.
Roman knelt down beside Megan once again, taking her trembling hand in his large, warm palm. "Where is that wooden box, Megan?"
"It's... it's in my staff locker in the basement," Megan whispered, her brown eyes filled with tears of realization. "I never opened it because I was afraid of what was inside. I thought it was just old debt papers my mother left behind."
"Viktor!" Roman called out, his voice sharp as a blade.
The security chief stepped forward immediately. "Yes, Boss?"
"Bring Graham Pierce to the sub-level interrogation vault," Roman ordered, his dark eyes burning with ruthless focus. "And send two guards with Megan down to the staff lockers to retrieve that box. Touch nothing else."
"Understood, sir," Viktor said, turning to execute the command.
Roman looked up at Megan, his thumb gently rubbing the back of her knuckles to steady her shaking hands. "You are not just a housekeeper in this house anymore, Megan. You and your daughter were brought to this estate for a reason."
"What reason?" Megan asked, her voice barely audible.

Roman looked down at little Sadie, who was now holding her green crayon against her cheek, looking up at him with her big, curious eyes.
"To help me tear down twenty years of lies," Roman said softly.
