Chapter 9 - the storm over the cliffs

The line went dead with a sharp hiss.
Upstairs in the master suite, Megan stood by the window, watching the distant storm clouds rolling in over the dark Pacific ocean. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the violent waves crashing against the rocks far below.
The suite door opened gently. Roman stepped inside.
He looked weary, his tactical jacket dusted with grime, but his dark eyes instantly locked onto Megan. The moment he saw her standing by the window, the cold rage in his chest melted away, replaced by an overwhelming warmth.
He walked over to her, stopping just inches away.
"It's done," Roman said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, peaceful resonance. "We uncovered their weapons cache beneath the gardens. Julian Vance knows his network in this city is dead."
Megan let out a soft, emotional breath, looking up into his rugged, handsome face. "Is it really over, Roman?"
"The war with Chicago is over," Roman corrected gently. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers slowly tracing the soft line of her jawline, brushing away a stray lock of soft brown hair. "But what started in this house today... is just beginning."
Megan’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, not from fear, but from the electric, intense spark passing between them. Standing this close to him, wrapped in his scent and his undeniable strength, she felt safer than she had ever felt in her life.
"Roman..." she whispered, her brown eyes shining in the dim light. "We're just simple people. I clean your rooms... I wear a maid uniform—"
"Stop," Roman interrupted softly, placing a warm finger against her soft lips. "Don't ever say that again. You are the strongest, most courageous woman I have ever met. You protected your daughter against armed men today. You gave me the key to my sister's memory."
He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers, his broad hands resting over her waist.
"You and Sadie belong here, Megan," Roman murmured, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "Not as employees. Not as guests. With me."
Tears of pure happiness welled in Megan's eyes. She lifted her small hands, placing them over his muscular chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath her palms.

"We want to stay with you, Roman," Megan confessed softly, her voice filled with quiet devotion.
Roman smiled—a breathtaking, genuine smile that illuminated his sharp features—and leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep, possessive kiss that sealed their unspoken promise.
