Chapter 10 - the symphony center

The Chicago Symphony Center was ablaze with golden light.

Paparazzi flashes strobed against the damp evening pavement as black town cars and limousines pulled up under the grand marquee. Chicago’s elite—governors, federal judges, hedge fund titans—streamed through the brass doors, dressed in black-tie tuxedos and diamond-encrusted couture.

Inside the VIP reception gallery on the second floor, Harrison Vance stood near the champagne fountain.

He was fifty-four, sleek, with silver hair brushed straight back, wearing a bespoke velvet tuxedo. Beside him stood Eleanor Caldwell, radiating aristocratic ice in a sapphire gown, diamond necklace glittering at her throat.

Harrison leaned in close to his sister, his champagne flute trembling slightly in his grip.

"Are you sure Keller handled it?" Harrison hissed under his breath. "The police scanner said the Maybach blew through the perimeter on Lake Shore Drive. We haven't heard from Keller in forty minutes."

"Keep your voice down," Eleanor muttered through a practiced socialite smile, nodding gracefully to a passing senator. "Even if Ethan survived the alley, he wouldn't dare cause a scene tonight. The United States Attorney for the Northern District is standing ten feet from us. Ethan knows the rules."

"Ethan doesn't have rules, Eleanor!" Harrison whispered, sweat beading along his hairline. "He was raised in the private sector and the underworld! If he has that tape—"

The massive brass double doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.

The room didn't just quiet down; the entire reception seemed to stop breathing.

Ethan Caldwell walked through the archway.

He wore an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, midnight-black velvet lapels framing his broad chest, his dark hair brushed back, his jaw clean and sharp. But it wasn't Ethan’s entrance that caused the room to freeze.

On his arm was Ivy Carter.

She looked breathtaking.

The gray maid uniform and exhaustion were completely gone. She wore an emerald-green silk column gown that hugged her slender figure, the deep green contrasting sharply with her fair, rosy skin. Her dark brown hair was styled into an elegant, sweeping updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck—where faint, artfully concealed makeup covered the fading bruises. Around her neck hung a simple antique pendant: the original bronze seal of Apex Systems.

She walked with her chin held high, her hand resting firmly inside the crook of Ethan’s muscular arm.

Harrison’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers.

The crystal glass shattered against the marble floor with a sharp, ringing crash. Champagne splashed across the hem of Eleanor’s sapphire gown, but neither of them looked down.

Eleanor’s face drained of every drop of color. Her lips parted, her manicured hand flying to her throat as if she were the one choking.

"That’s... that’s impossible," Harrison choked out, taking an involuntary step backward.

Ethan didn't shout. He didn't rush.

With measured, dominant strides, he escorted Ivy straight through the parted sea of Chicago high society, stopping exactly three feet in front of Harrison and Eleanor.

The silence in the grand gallery was suffocating. Every camera, every high-powered eye in the room was locked onto them.

Ethan looked down at Harrison with eyes as dark as an open grave.

"You dropped your glass, Harrison," Ethan said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room.

Harrison swallowed hard, his face glistening with cold sweat. "Ethan... this is a private foundation event. You can't just bring domestic staff into—"

"Miss Carter isn't domestic staff," Ethan interrupted, his voice smooth, cold, and commanding. "She is the sole surviving heir to David Carter, and forty-nine percent owner of Caldwell Logistics Global."

A collective murmur rolled through the crowd.

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes blazing with desperate fury. "She’s a liar and a thief! She broke into my estate—"

"Marcus," Ethan said quietly.

From the edge of the gallery, Marcus raised a hand toward the audio-visual booth overlooking the ballroom.

Instantly, the ambient classical music cut out.

Through the massive high-definition speakers mounted throughout the Symphony Center, the unmistakable sound of Harrison Vance’s voice echoed off the gilded ceiling:

*“David, Arthur is in Zurich drooling on a bib... Eleanor and I run the estate now... You won’t make it to Michigan Avenue, David. Eleanor already spoke to the driver.”*

Harrison collapsed against the high cocktail table, knocking over two more glasses.

Eleanor stared at the ceiling speakers, her hands shaking violently, her aristocratic poise completely shattering into raw, naked panic.

"Turn it off!" Harrison screamed, lunging toward the AV console. "Turn it off!"

Two tall men in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, blocking Harrison’s path. They pulled federal credentials from their coats.

"Harrison Vance," Special Agent Miller said, stepping forward. "Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have an active arrest warrant for wire fraud, corporate extortion, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Harrison turned frantically toward the service exit, but Ethan stepped directly into his path, towering over him like an iron wall.

"You took seven years of her life, Harrison," Ethan whispered, loud enough for only Harrison to hear. "Now you’ll spend the rest of yours in a federal penitentiary."

May you like

Two federal agents seized Harrison’s arms, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists behind his back as the cameras flashed in a relentless, blinding storm.
