Chapter 15 - the name on the envelope

Ivy broke the wax seal on the cream-colored envelope.
Her hands were steady now, anchored by the quiet, overwhelming presence of the man standing beside her. She unfolded the single sheet of heavy parchment, her eyes sweeping over her father’s neat, familiar handwriting.
*My dearest Ivy,*
*If you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid. It means Harrison Vance and Eleanor Caldwell have taken Apex Systems, and I am no longer there to protect you and your mother.*
*Do not hate the Caldwell family for what happened. Arthur Caldwell was an honorable man who was poisoned by his own household before he could stop them. And Ethan was a boy sent away so he wouldn't see the rot inside his father's house.*
*The safe deposit box contains everything you need to claim your forty-nine percent. But there is a second key. A master key to a storage locker at the Port of Chicago, Terminal 4.*
*Inside that container is the original prototype server for the Apex automated logistics network. And on that server is the encrypted communication log between Harrison Vance and the man who truly financed the hit on my life.*
*It wasn't Eleanor, Ivy.*
*Eleanor was greedy, but she was weak. The man who gave the order—the man who controlled the Cayman accounts from the shadows—was someone Arthur Caldwell trusted above all others.*
*Look for the falcon with the broken wing.*
*I love you, my brave girl. Live a life without fear.*
*Your father, David.*
Ivy lowered the letter, her chest rising and falling quickly. Her eyes met Ethan’s in the dim light of the suite.
"The falcon with the broken wing," Ivy whispered, her voice trembling. "Ethan... what does that mean?"
Ethan didn't speak.
Slowly, deliberately, Ethan reached up to the cuff of his white dress shirt. He unbuttoned the left sleeve and rolled the fabric back past his wrist, exposing the intricate, dark ink covering the underside of his forearm.
There, etched permanently into his skin beneath a series of faded Roman numerals, was a detailed black crest:
A double-headed falcon, its right wing shattered and bound in iron chains.
Ivy gasped, stepping back, her eyes wide with shock. "Ethan..."
"It’s not my crest," Ethan said, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and deadly as an open blade. "It was the private insignia of my brother’s yacht. The *Peregrine*."
He pulled the black leather ledger from his inner pocket, flipping it open to the yellowed page he had read minutes earlier.
Beside the four international wire transfers to Nova Scotia, stamped in faded blue ink directly over the Cayman account numbers, was the exact same mark: the falcon with the broken wing.
The truth crashed down on them both like a shattered chandelier.
Harrison and Eleanor hadn't just embezzled money for themselves.
They had been working under the orders of Julian Caldwell.
Ethan’s younger brother hadn't drowned three years ago. He had faked his own death, orchestrated the takeover of Apex Systems from the shadows, and used his own family’s legal machinery to build an empire hidden entirely from Ethan’s sight.
And Ryan Cole, Keller, the hit in the alley, the threats against Mia—none of it was Eleanor’s desperate panic.
It was Julian, cleaning house before returning to claim the Caldwell throne.
"He’s alive," Ivy whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "Your brother is alive."
"Yes," Ethan said, his jaw tightening until the muscle twitched like clockwork. "He is."
Marcus suddenly stepped through the outer suite door, his phone pressed hard against his ear. His calm, professional demeanor was completely shattered, his face pale as chalk.
"Ethan," Marcus said, his voice strained.
Ethan didn't turn around. "What is it, Marcus?"
"The federal transport carrying Harrison Vance," Marcus said, his fingers tightening around the phone. "It was intercepted on the Kennedy Expressway five minutes ago."
Ethan turned slowly, his eyes narrowing to slits. "Did he escape?"
"No," Marcus replied grimly. "Two black tactical SUVs forced the armored van off the bridge. Harrison Vance was pulled from the wreckage and executed on the asphalt with two shots to the chest. The shooters vanished into the industrial corridor."
Ivy gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
Ethan stood motionless in the center of the luxurious hotel room, the full weight of the coming war settling over his shoulders.
The immediate battle was won. Ivy was safe. Mia had the medical care that would save her life. The stolen shares of Apex Systems were restored to their rightful owner. Harrison was dead, and Eleanor was locked behind federal bars.
Season one of the nightmare was over.
But the dark architect behind it all was no longer a shadow.
Ethan’s private phone vibrated on the marble table.
