Chapter 1

The silence in the magnificent Chicago charity gala ballroom was absolute, heavy, and suffocating. The classical orchestra had ceased playing, leaving only the faint, crystalline chime of the grand chandeliers swaying gently above the wealthy guests. On the polished marble floor, a puddle of spilled apple juice spread outward from the discarded silver tray. Hannah Carter remained on her knees, her plus-sized frame trembling violently beneath her mint-green service dress. Her fair, rosy cheeks were stained with fresh tears, and her white lace apron was clutched in the tiny, desperate fists of three-year-old Sophia Moretti.
Luca Moretti stood frozen just inches away, his towering, muscular frame casting a long, cinematic shadow over the kneeling woman and his daughter. The feared Mafia boss was usually a man of terrifying, unshakeable calm, but in this moment, the carefully constructed mask of the Chicago underworld king had cracked. His thick dark brown hair was slightly disheveled, and his piercing, intense eyes burned with a chaotic mixture of shock, confusion, and rising fury. He stared at Hannah’s tearful, expressive eyes, processing the impossible words she had just whispered.
"What did you just say?" Luca demanded, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that sent a visible shiver through the elegant guests standing nearby. He took a slow, deliberate step forward in his polished black dress shoes, his black suit shifting over his broad shoulders.
Hannah swallowed hard, her soft blonde-brown hair trembling in its neat bun. She tightened her protective embrace around Sophia, completely ignoring the terrifying reputation of the man looming over her. "I said... I was there. Three years ago. The night the estate was attacked."
"Daddy, don't be mad!" Sophia cried out joyfully, her long curly golden-brown hair bouncing as she turned her head to look up at her father. The little girl in the pale-yellow floral dress was standing on her own two feet for the first time in her conscious memory, her tiny legs shaking but holding firm. "She came back, Daddy! Hannah kept her promise!"
Luca’s jaw tightened, the sharp masculine lines of his face hardening as he looked from his miraculously standing daughter to the trembling waitress. He raised a tattooed hand, signaling his heavily armed bodyguards in black suits.
"Clear the ballroom," Luca ordered coldly, his American accent sharp and commanding. "Get these guests out of here immediately. Lock down all exits. No one leaves the building without my authorization."
"Right away, Mr. Moretti," his lead bodyguard, Matteo, replied, instantly moving to herd the stunned, whispering elite toward the grand mahogany doors.
Luca knelt down slowly, his dark dress shirt pulling slightly at the collar to reveal the edge of his dark chest tattoos. He extended his hands toward his fragile daughter. "Sophia, sweetheart. Come to me."
Sophia shook her head, burying her rosy face into Hannah’s white lace-trimmed shoulder. "No! You have to promise you won't hurt her! She saved me from the bad men!"
May you like
"I am not going to hurt her, Sophia," Luca promised, his voice softening into a desperate, fatherly tone that the criminal underworld had never heard. He locked his intense eyes onto Hannah’s terrified face. "But she is going to tell me exactly how a catering waitress knows my daughter, and why my daughter, who hasn't walked since she was an infant, just ran across a marble floor into her arms."
"I'll tell you everything, Mr. Moretti," Hannah whispered, her voice shaking but filled with a sudden, fierce maternal courage. "But we can't stay out here in the open. The people who attacked your home three years ago... they never stopped looking for me."
