Chapter 1 - The Espresso in the Gray Harbor

The rain struck the tall, arched bay windows of the Boston harbor estate in steady, rhythmic sheets, blurring the gray ocean waters into a misty horizon. Inside the grand private study, the air was heavy with the scent of aged leather, floor polish, and cold rain. Deep mahogany bookshelves stretched to the high ceiling, framing an expansive oak desk where Dominic Ferrero sat.

At fifty-three, the mafia boss was an imposing mountain of a man. His tailored black suit draped perfectly over his broad frame, his black shirt unbuttoned slightly at the collar, and his luxury watch glinted faintly under the dim chandelier light. Yet on this gray afternoon, Dominic looked uncharacteristically drained. His piercing blue-gray eyes were unfocused, his rugged face slightly pale, and his large hands rested sluggishly beside an untouched cup of espresso and a crystal glass of water.

Standing along the dark wood paneling were four hard-faced enforcers, their dark suits neat, their expressions rigid with tense silence. Near the desk stood Marco Bellini, Dominic’s chief lieutenant, his athletic build locked in a watchful posture, his sharp beard setting a stern jaw as he observed his chief's unusual fatigue.

The heavy oak double doors clicked open, breaking the silence.

Seven-year-old Lucia Reva wandered into the room. She was a vision of pure innocence amidst the shadows, wearing a pale-pink dress with puff sleeves, white shoes, and a light pink bow pinning back her long brown hair. Behind her, breathless and pale with terror, rushed her mother, Alina. Dressed in her simple black-and-white maid uniform, Alina’s dark brown hair was pinned neatly back, her hands trembling as she reached for her daughter.

From the doorway, Mrs. Bianchi, the estate's stern housekeeper, gasped softly, her hands clasped tightly over her apron in horror.

Lucia did not stop. She walked straight past the towering bodyguards, her wide, observant eyes fixed entirely on Dominic. She stopped two feet from the desk, raised her tiny finger, and pointed calmly at the dark espresso.

"You’re not tired, sir," Lucia said, her voice clear, certain, and quiet. "You’re drugged."

The entire room froze instantly.

Marco’s head snapped toward the little girl, then to the porcelain cup, and finally to Dominic. The four enforcers shifted their weight, their hands drifting toward their jackets. Alina’s face drained of all color as she lunged forward, grabbing Lucia’s small shoulders to pull her back into her chest.

"I’m so sorry, sir—she shouldn’t be in here—please forgive her," Alina stammered, her voice shaking violently as she backed toward the door.

Dominic did not move, but his blue-gray eyes sharpened with a sudden, lethal clarity. He slowly raised one broad hand, silencing Alina’s apologies without a word. He leaned forward over the desk, his gaze shifting from the little girl to the dark liquid in the cup.

"Why would you say that?" Dominic asked, his deep voice quiet, rough, and dangerous.

Lucia gently resisted her mother's pull, standing her ground with total innocence. "Because your eyes look sleepy, but your hands look wrong. And that drink smells bitter like medicine."

Dominic’s jaw set like iron. He glanced at the men standing around the room. Near the back bookshelf, one of the suited enforcers stiffened, his knuckles whitening as he gripped his lapel. Marco’s sharp eyes caught the subtle movement immediately.

Lucia pointed once more at the espresso, her tone matter-of-fact. "Because the bad one is in the cup."

Dominic slowly reached out his right hand. Instead of lifting the cup to his lips, he deliberately struck it with his palm, knocking the porcelain over. Dark, steaming coffee spilled violently across the polished oak desk, pooling near the crystal glass of water.

Dominic rose slowly from his leather chair, his tall, broad frame looming over the room, now fully alert and terrifyingly calm. Marco moved like a striking predator, lunging across the rug to grab the nervous enforcer before the man could reach into his jacket.

Alina pulled Lucia tightly into her arms, shaking with terror as the room exploded into silent, suffocating panic.

Dominic stepped around the desk, looking down at Lucia with stunned respect, before turning his icy gaze toward his men.

May you like

"Lock the doors," Dominic commanded, his voice cold and absolute. "No one leaves this room."

As the heavy iron deadbolts clicked shut from the outside, the nervous enforcer pinned against the wall let out a strangled gasp, dropping a tiny glass vial onto the carpet.
