Chapter 6 - The Cold Tides

The damp air inside the subterranean chamber felt colder than the ocean outside. Alina stood frozen against the granite wall, her mind reeling as the weight of Dominic's words crashed over her.
"No..." Alina breathed, shaking her head in utter disbelief. "My mother told me my father was a sailor who died at sea. She never mentioned the Ferrero family!"
"She lied to protect you, Alina," Dominic said, his deep voice filled with a solemnity that commanded complete belief. "Twenty years ago, when the Chicago coalition tried to wipe out our family line, Joseph sent your mother into hiding under a false identity. He put fifty percent of the Boston harbor commercial deeds into a private trust registered under your birth name."
Marco stepped closer, his eyes widening as the piece of the puzzle locked into place. "That's why Cassian tried to poison you today, Boss. He didn't just want to take over the syndicate. He needed you dead so the trust would default to the secondary board—which he secretly controls."
"And he needed Alina and Lucia gone so no bloodline heir could ever claim the deeds," Dominic added, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.
Lucia reached into her mother's apron pocket, pulling out a small silver pendant shaped like an anchor—a piece of jewelry Alina had worn every day of her life.
"Mommy's necklace has the same picture on the back," Lucia said innocently, holding it up to the dim red light.
Dominic took the pendant gently, popping the small latch open with his thumbnail. Inside was a microscopic engraving of a serial number matching the master deed vault in downtown Boston.
"It's the key," Dominic said.
Suddenly, the red emergency lighting in the subterranean passage flickered and died, plunging the chamber into pitch-black shadow.
From the top of the stone staircase behind them, the heavy iron security door slammed shut with a thunderous CLANG, followed by the distinct sound of an electronic magnetic lock engaging from the outside.
A cold, metallic voice echoed through the ventilation grate above their heads:
"Dominic... I see you found Joseph's little secret."
It was Cassian—Dominic’s senior lieutenant. His voice was smooth, arrogant, and laced with murderous confidence.

"You were always too sentimental about family, Boss," Cassian’s voice rasped through the grate. "Now you, the girl, and the child can rot together forty feet beneath the tide. The salt valves are opening."
A heavy mechanical groan echoed through the floorboards as massive iron sluice gates deep within the foundation began to open, allowing the cold Atlantic seawater to pour into the subterranean vaults.
