Chapter 7 - The awakening

By midnight, the heavy silence of the medical wing was broken by a low, gravelly voice.

"Marcus."

Marcus stepped into the room. Vincent was sitting up, his pristine white shirt replaced by a dark medical Henley. Despite nearly dying hours earlier, the frighteningly controlled aura of the Mafia Boss had completely returned. His eyes were cold, sharp, and calculating. Dr. Lena stood quietly in the corner, packing her medical supplies.

"Report," Vincent commanded.

Marcus stepped closer to the bed. "A targeted neurotoxin, slipped into your espresso. The cameras in your wing were remotely disabled for exactly five minutes. It was an inside job, Boss."

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Who."

Marcus hesitated for only a second. "Adeline was wandering the hall. She saw the man leaving your office right before you collapsed. She identified him by the sound of a ticking pocket watch."

Vincent closed his eyes. The betrayal of blood was a wound far deeper than any poison. He remained silent for a long moment, his mind working through the tactical chessboard of his empire. When he opened his eyes, there was no sorrow, only absolute, chilling resolve.

"Bring him to my office," Vincent said softly. "And bring the child."
